West Bromwich Albion kick 2026 off with a trip to South Wales where they'll face Swansea City in the Sky Bet Championship on New Year's Day (ko 3pm).

The Baggies come into this one after an important win over QPR at The Hawthorns on Monday night, where headers from George Campbell and Nat Phillips were enough to see off their West London opponents.

Hosts Swansea are also on a high following their victory over Oxford United on Monday. Slovenian striker Zan Vipotnik scored the only goal at the Kassam Stadium.

Albion claimed a dramatic 3-2 triumph in the reverse fixture towards the end of November, coming back from 2-0 down at the interval to secure three points. Check out the highlights from that particular game below.

The opposition

Swansea City turned their fortunes around in December after enduring a nightmare November.

The Swans lost five straight Sky Bet Championship matches in the eleventh month of 2025, but then went on to collect 12 points from a possible 18 in the final month of the calendar year, winning four and losing two of their six fixtures.

Those triumphs over Oxford (twice), Portsmouth and Wrexham helped moved them seven points clear of danger having been sat outside the bottom three only on goal difference after their dramatic defeat at The Hawthorns at the back end of November.

Vitor Matos was appointed five days before Swansea's trip to The Hawthorns and lost his first two encounters. However, since then, he's had a positive impact on the team and will be pleased to have manufactured breathing space between themselves and the danger zone heading into 2026.

Matos, a 37-year-old Portuguese, arrived from Maritimo in his homeland. He's also worked for Liverpool as their elite development coach, as well as FC Porto, Red Bull Salzburg and Shandong Taishan. The role at the Swansea.com Stadium is his first as a senior boss.

The hosts head into the New Year's Day battle on the back of three straight home wins. Their overall record this season in the second tier in front of their own fans reads five wins, three draws and four defeats from a dozen encounters.

Memorable meeting

The Baggies were 2-1 winners over the Swans in South Wales back in November 2018.

Oli McBurnie put the hosts ahead inside the opening minutes, but headers before the break from defenders Craig Dawson and Ahmed Hegazi turned the contest around.

Both sides had opportunities in the second period, but Darren Moore's men hung on to secure three points.

Swansea City 1-1 Albion, January 2025

Swansea City denied Albion a victory with virtually the final touch 12 months ago in South Wales. The Baggies took the lead in the second period when Tom Fellows squeezed the ball past Lawrence Vigouroux, but, sadly, the hosts rescued a point at the death. Midfielder Joe Allen met a cross from the left and headed home an equaliser. Check out the highlights below.

Swansea City 1-0 Albion, January 2024

The Baggies were narrowly beaten by the Swans on what was a miserable New Year's Day in 2024. Liam Cullen scored the contest's only goal ten minutes after the break.

Swansea City 3-2 Albion, May 2023

The hosts edged a five-goal thriller on the final day of the 2022/23 Sky Bet Championship campaign. Okay Yokuslu put the visitors into an early lead, but it was a lead that was cancelled out by Luke Cundle's strike in the middle of the first 45. Semi Ajayi made it 2-1 in the opening ten minutes of the second half, however Swansea were back on level terms through Olivier Ntcham after 66 minutes. The game looked to be heading for a draw, only for Joel Piroe to fire home a last-minute free-kick to win it for the South Wales side.

How's that for a stat

Albion are visiting Swansea City in early January for the third successive season. The two teams met in South Wales on New Year's Day in 2024 and went head-to-head at the Swansea.com Stadium on January 4 in 2025.

Swansea are on a five-match unbeaten run against the Baggies in front of their own supporters (W3, D2). The last Albion win at the Swansea.com Stadium was the 2-1 triumph in the second tier in November 2018 under Darren Moore.

Four of the last seven meetings between the two clubs have ended in 3-2 scorelines, with both sides winning two of those each.

The Swans' 3-2 defeat at The Hawthorns in late November was their fifth in-a-row. Since then, they've won four games out of six (L2).

Vitor Matos's men have won three consecutive home matches, beating Oxford United, Portsmouth and Wrexham. They've conceded just one goal in those three games.
