Albion were beaten by Sheffield Wednesday on Sky Bet Championship final day at Hillsborough.

Home goals from Nathaniel Chalobah and Liam Palmer were the difference between the two sides, despite Karlan Grant's late consolation.

The Baggies attempted to dampen the buoyant atmosphere in Sheffield, and almost did so in the early stages when Aune Heggebø ghosted in behind the Wednesday back-line, before squaring to Ollie Bostock - whose effort was cut out before it could trouble Pierce Charles.

Jamal Lowe was the first to test Max O’Leary in the visiting goal. A deflected cross fell at the feet of the Jamaican international, who couldn’t adjust his body quickly enough to prevent the Albion goalkeeper from smothering the effort.

Forward Heggebø dragged a low shot into the hands of Charles, before Josh Maja met Danny Imray’s cross, but the visiting forward couldn’t divert past the goalkeeper.

But it was Nathaniel Chalobah who opened the scoring for the hosts, as he flicked past O’Leary to notch the hosts’ first.

That goal appeared to turn the tide of the game, and Wednesday went on to double their advantage. Home skipper Liam Palmer was on hand to provide the finishing touch just five minutes before half-time.

Lowe came close again when he struck the post, but substitute Grant scored a visiting consolation for the final goal of the match, bringing Albion’s 2025/26 campaign to a close.
