Pre-season 2025/26 | Albion 3-2 Rayo Vallecano

Karlan Grant celebrates with Aune Heggebø and Jed Wallace after scoring at The Hawthorns against Rayo Vallecano

West Bromwich Albion wrapped up pre-season with an entertaining 3-2 victory over La Liga outfit and UEFA Conference League qualifiers Rayo Vallecano at The Hawthorns on Saturday afternoon.

All five goals came in the last 20 minutes of the match, with Jayson Molumby, Karlan Grant and Isaac Price all on target for the hosts.

The opening half was a tight one, with very few meaningful opportunities.

The Spanish side controlled possession in the early stages but failed to carve out chances. Albion grew into contest and saw a lot more of the ball from the 15-minute mark onwards.

Alex Mowatt fired over the crossbar from distance before Grant had a shot from inside the box saved by goalkeeper Augusto Batalla.

Rayo almost took the lead with the final touch of the first period - Randy Nteka's stooping header at the front post bounced back off Josh Griffiths' near post and the Baggies managed to clear.

The visitors went 1-0 up with 20 minutes of the second half remaining. Griffiths came out to meet a long pass forward but was beaten by the bounce, leaving an open goal for substitute Jorge De Frutos to roll the ball into.

Ryan Mason's men responded in emphatic fashion, scoring three times in five minutes to completely turn the encounter around.

Molumby controlled the ball on the edge of the box and fired it into the bottom corner just four minutes after Rayo's strike.

Grant made it 2-1 three minutes later. The forward finished from close range having seen team-mates Jed Wallace and Price thwarted in the same action by Batalla seconds earlier.

But the Northern Ireland international didn't have to wait too long to get himself on the scoresheet. Wallace broke down the right and laid it to Price who found the top corner with a right-footed effort from the edge of the box.

Vallecano pulled one back in spectacular fashion with six minutes remaining when Gerard Gumbau, another introduced after the interval for the away team, rifled a shot into the bottom corner from over 25 yards.

The Baggies welcome Blackburn Rovers to The Hawthorns next Saturday for what will be their opening fixture of the 2025/26 Sky Bet Championship campaign.
