For the purpose of this policy "the club" relates to West Bromwich Albion Football Club.
West Bromwich Albion is dedicated to minimising the impact the club has on the environment. It is recognised that our operations have an impact on the local, national and global environment.
Because of this, the Club is committed to taking steps where practicable to minimize any adverse impact that we may have on the environment.
The club is committed to reducing our environmental impact and continually improving our environmental performance as an integral part of our business strategy and operating methods.
We will encourage customers, suppliers, staff and supporters to share our view and work towards a more environmentally friendly football club.
Our Policy Aims:
- Improve environmental performance;
- Continually improve and reduce environmental impacts;
- Reduce and aim to eliminate usage of single use products;
- Develop an “environmental culture” where environmental factors are considered as part of all business decisions;
- Increase employee awareness;
- Raise awareness amongst our supporters and customers;
- Promote alternative forms of transport for fans and staff to and from the stadium and training ground, utilizing car share where possible.
West Bromwich Albion aims to meet, and where possible, exceed the requirements of all relevant environmental legislation. We will regularly audit our compliance with such legislation and in doing
so aim to improve our environmental performance wherever economically practical. It is recognized that a key element of achieving policy aims is through its implementation of the strategy.
West Bromwich Albion realizes that sustainable waste management is a key element of our environmental strategy. As such we undertake to recycle materials wherever possible and to reduce the production, use and disposal of any material that is not reusable. We will try and work with our suppliers to ensure that they recognize and reduce the environmental impact of their products and transportation. The Club strives to minimize waste across our operations. Key measures currently in place include:
- Separation of waste into “general waste” and “mixed recycling”;
- Separation and recycling of glass;
- Separation and recycling of green waste e.g. grass cuttings;
- Recycling of all old IT equipment;
- Recycling of all waste oil.
- Eliminate usage of single use materials / plastics where practicable
Energy and water use
In line with our Energy Policy the Club will aim to use energy and water as efficiently as possible and where financially sustainable, renewable energy will be bought from energy suppliers.
Usage of all energy and water will be kept to a minimum with various control measures put in place to reduce where practicable.
As such this includes:
- Replacement of conventional lighting with LED fittings;
- Installation of motion sensors where practical rather than switches;
- Installation of timers on “automatic lighting” e.g. car park lights;
- Installation of push taps instead of conventional taps;
- Installation of waterless urinals / water management systems;
- Reduction of water during flushes;
- Building management systems.
The club will continue to audit and monitor its operations via our ESOS submissions and through meeting our requirements under ESOS and SECR legal obligations.
Where possible West Bromwich Albion will source materials that are “environmentally friendly” or contain a high amount of recyclable / recycled material. Where possible the use of single use materials and plastics will be eliminated. Similarly all food purchased is currently and will continue to be bought from sustainable sources e.g. fish
The club continually looks at the materials purchased by both the maintenance and cleaning departments to ensure they are sourced from sustainable sources (e.g. wood) where possible or contain chemicals that do not damage the environment (e.g. paint or cleaning fluids)
West Bromwich Albion works closely with all external travel partners ensuring that there are suitable public transportation opportunities to get to the stadium both on match days and Monday to Friday.
The club will work closely with customers, contractors and commercial partners where appropriate to help plan and develop our environmental performance. We will look for opportunities to promote environmental best practice and encourage our customers to take positive action in areas such as transportation and recycling.
The Club will endeavour to minimize fuel consumption and exhaust emissions by encouraging staff to walk or cycle to work and to only travel to meetings where absolutely necessary.
West Bromwich Albion will continue to assess and reduce where possible our environmental performance during the planning of refurbishment works and redevelopment of all our facilities.
This will include ensuring all works reduce the current energy footprint (e.g. use of LED lights) as well as ensuring that the contractors used both adhere to the club’s policy as well as have their own.
The feasibility of installing car charge points on the East stand car park is currently being explored.
An environmentally friendly culture will continue to be developed amongst all staff and will form part of the new staff induction process.
The Club will attempt to maximize the awareness of our staff regarding environmental issues by using internal mail, posters and the staff intranet. Staff will be encouraged to participate in the environmental work undertaken by the Club and to make suggestions as to how the Club’s environmental performance could be improved.
The Club will use communication channels to try and assist supporters to use products and services in an environmentally sensitive way.
- Increase the use of our Building Management System (BMS) to help reduce energy costs;
- Improve and explore new recycling methods;
- Reduce usage of single use products;
- Increase use of LED lighting where possible;
- Increase use of motion sensors in place of switches;
- Explore voltage optimisation.
