Dual-registered Albion Women defender Lucy Day featured in all three UEFA WU19 Euro qualifiers for Wales in Switzerland this week.

The Birmingham City defender, who’s with the Baggies until the end of the season, made her first competitive appearances for Cymru.

Nia Davies’ side would’ve wanted to get off to a better start at the beginning of the week. Defender Lucy Day played 90 minutes as Wales were beaten 3-0 by hosts Switzerland at the Tissot-Arena, where Emanuela Pfiser scored twice, and Johanna Thüer added to the scoreline to get off to the perfect start.

But things were about to take a turn for the better for the centre-half and her nation when they took on England in matchday two. Cymru pulled out the stops as they came from behind to beat the young Lionesses 3-2 in Copet - as Emily Cole and Scarlett Hill (2) got their names on the scoresheet to put them back in contention for qualification. Day’s header was turned inadvertently past the goalkeeper by Hill as she notched her second.

Next up for the 18-year-old’s Wales was Latvia, as they steamed into a three-goal advantage within 27 minutes through Cole, Nia Lewis and Casi Gregson, before Jekaterina Haritonova grabbed what would turn out to be a consolation.

All in all, it was a successful outing personally for Day, who managed 90 minutes in each of Cymru’s fixtures, and for her national side, as they retained their League A status.
