Albion Powerchair secure passage into Club World Cup semi-finals

Albion Powerchair secured their spot in the FIPFA Club World Cup semi-final stage with a 3-0 win over Western Sydney Wanderers on Wednesday afternoon.

The Baggies held onto their early dominance in the tie, with goals from Chris Gordon (2) and Lucas Christer ensuring their qualification from Group A.

Albion have the chance to take on tournament high-flyers Grafteaux Villeneuve d’Ascq, who finished first in Group B – when they meet in the semi-final.

The Baggies had their sights set on redeeming themselves after defeat to Upsilon Châtenay-Malabry yesterday, and came out of the traps quickly. Set pieces were once again the weapon of choice, as Brad Bates picked out Chris Gordon at the back post for a simple finish to hand Albion a single-goal advantage.

Gordon once again came up with the goods for the Baggies, this time from the penalty spot. The team’s player/coach rifled home for two after Matt Gilbert was fouled inside the penalty area.

Some neat interplay in the opposition half gave Albion further breathing room, Gilbert teed up Lucas Christer to swing into the bottom corner, giving the youngster his first of the tournament.

Western Sydney Wanderers almost replied just after half-time, Ben Keyte came close with a thunderous strike which left the Baggies grateful for their left-hand post.

Gilbert almost added to their total, but Albion were forced to settle for three goals and three points – a place in the semi-finals against French side Grafteaux Villeneuve d’Ascq awaits.

Albion: Gordon (c), Christer, Inel, Rock, Bates, Bolt, Gilbert.
