The Baggies make the journey to Watford on Wednesday night in the Sky Bet Championship (ko 7.45pm).

Ryan Mason's squad picked up a welcome win at The Hawthorns on Saturday, defeating Preston North End by two goals to one thanks to spectacular efforts from Mikey Johnston and Isaac Price.

Hosts Watford suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat at Bramall Lane against Sheffield United on the same day as the Baggies' victory over the Lilywhites. That result leaves the Hornets in the bottom half of the division heading into the midweek clash, but they're just five points behind Albion.

The opposition

Watford will be hoping to kick-start their season on Wednesday after making an inconsistent beginning to the 2025/26 term.

The Hornets, now into their fourth straight year in the Sky Bet Championship, have won three, drawn three and lost four of their first ten games.

Albion's opponents were beaten 1-0 by Sheffield United in a tight tussle up in Yorkshire on Saturday afternoon, a result which brought to an end their three-game unbeaten run.

Watford have picked up some decent results at home already, defeating QPR, Hull City and Oxford United. They have the opportunity to secure a third victory in-a-row at Vicarage Road when Ryan Mason's men visit in midweek.

Javi Gracia was recently appointed boss for the second time. The Spaniard, who also held the position between January 2018 and September 2019, took charge earlier this month after Paulo Pezzolano's departure. Gracia, 55, has an eye-catching managerial CV. He's worked at Osasuna, Malaga and Valencia in his homeland, Rubin Kazan in Russia and Leeds here in England.

His first match back at Watford was that setback at Sheffield United and he'll be determined to secure a win on his return to Vicarage Road when the Baggies come to town.

Memorable meeting

The Baggies won 3-0 at Vicarage Road in November 2007 in the Championship.

All three goals came in a 16-minute spell towards the end of the first half and the beginning of the second period.

Ishmael Miller, Kevin Phillips and Martin Albrechtsen were all on target that particular afternoon.

Check out the highlights below.

Albion's recent record at Vicarage Road

Watford 2-1 Albion, December 2024

The Hornets were victorious the last time the Baggies visited ten days before Christmas in 2024. Forward Vakoun Bayo scored shortly before and after the break to give Watford a 2-0 lead before Jayson Molumby pulled one back. Albion pushed for a leveller but couldn't find one as the second-tier points went the way of the home side.

Watford 2-2 Albion, September 2023

The Baggies and Watford both earned a point on a night where all four goals arrived in the opening 23 minutes of the encounter. The Hornets went ahead through Tom Ince, but the Baggies struck twice in three minutes to turn the game on its head - John Swift curled in a free-kick before Jed Wallace stretched to divert in from close range. However, the hosts quickly got back on level terms when Matheus Martins beat Alex Palmer, a goal that proved to be the final one of the contest. Watch the highlights below.

Watford 3-2 Albion, February 2023

Albion suffered a narrow defeat at Vicarage Road in February 2023. Ken Sema opened the scoring for the home team in the first 45, but Conor Townsend equalised 11 minutes after the restart. Ismaila Sarr made it 2-1 to Watford, but Jed Wallace's goal meant it was level heading into the final quarter. Unfortunately for the Baggies, Sema scored his second and Watford went on the claim all three points.

How's that for a stat

Both meetings between Watford and West Bromwich Albion in the 2023/24 and 2024/25 campaigns ended in the same scorelines. The two matches in 2023/24 finished 2-2, while in 2024/25, the home team recorded 2-1 triumphs.

One or both teams have scored exactly two goals in all of the last five head-to-head fixtures.

Watford are on a seven-match unbeaten run against West Bromwich Albion at Vicarage Road (W4, D3). The last time the Baggies won at the home of the Hornets was back in November 2007 when they secured a 3-0 triumph in the second tier.

The Hornets have won three of their five second-tier home matches so far in 2025/26, drawing one and losing one. All three of those triumphs over QPR, Hull City and Oxford United have been by 2-1 scorelines.

All five of Albion's league victories this term have been by one-goal margins.
