The opposition
Southampton have turned their fortunes around after a really slow start to life back in the Sky Bet Championship.
Saints, who were relegated from the top flight last season, have won five of their last six matches - results which have helped fire them up to within three points of the top six having sat towards the bottom of the division for a prolonged period of time.
They've beaten QPR (2-1 away), Sheffield Wednesday (3-1 home), Charlton (5-1 away), Leicester (3-0 home) and, most recently, Birmingham City (3-1 home) on Saturday.
Tonda Eckert, 32, started the 2025/26 term as the club's Under-21s coach. Will Still was handed the manager's position in the summer, but the former Reims and Lens boss departed at the start of November. Eckert stepped up and secured four wins from five, prompting the decision-makers at St Mary's Stadium to give him the reins on a full-time basis the day before their triumph over Blues.
It's his maiden experience as a senior boss, but the German has previously been an assistant at Barnsley and Genoa.
Saints have won three in-a-row at their own ground and have a record of four wins, three draws and two defeats from nine second-tier fixtures on home soil.
Memorable meeting
The Baggies claimed three Premier League points on the south coast on the final day of 2016.
Former Albion forward Shane Long headed in the game's opening goal four minutes before the break, but Matt Phillips' assured finish meant the two teams went in on level terms at the break.
Hal Robson-Kanu proved to the be matchwinner in the second period, firing in a spectacular strike from the edge of the box.
Virgil van Dijk was also dismissed right at the end for Southampton. Check out the highlights below.
Albion's recent record at St Mary's Stadium
Southampton 3-1 Albion, May 2024
The Baggies were denied the opportunity to play in the Sky Bet Championship play-off final after suffering a defeat at St Mary's. Having drawn 0-0 in the first leg at The Hawthorns a few days earlier, Saints took full advantage of playing in front of their own supporters and scored three second-half goals. Will Smallbone was first to find the net, before Adam Armstrong helped himself to a brace. Cedric Kipre nodded in a consolation with the final touch.
Southampton 2-1 Albion, November 2023
Carlos Corberán's team were narrowly beaten by the Saints six weeks before Christmas in 2023. Will Smallbone scored after just five minutes, but Kyle Bartley bundled home an equaliser in the middle of the second 45. Unfortunately for the visitors, Adam Armstrong bagged a winner 11 minutes from time.
Southampton 2-0 Albion, October 2020
The hosts claimed all three Premier League points towards the start of the 2020/21 term. Moussa Djenepo made it 1-0 shortly before the interval and Oriol Romeu secured the triumph by scoring a second with just over 20 minutes remaining.
How's that for a stat
The Baggies will be facing Southampton for the 86th time on Tuesday. The Saints have won 35 of the previous 85 meetings, with Albion claiming 25 triumphs. There have also been 25 draws.
Southampton have won their last three home games, scoring exactly three goals in all of those fixtures.
Albion forward Aune Heggebø has now scored six goals in his last five games, and three in his last two appearances.
Both teams have scored in all five of Albion's last five matches, while both sides have hit the back of the net in five of Southampton's last six fixtures. The Saints and the Baggies both scored in each of the head-to-head meetings during the 2023/24 campaign at St Mary's Stadium (2-1 in November 2023 and 3-1 in May 2024).
Southampton are unbeaten in four against Albion (W3, D1). The last time the Baggies beat Tuesday's hosts was in April 2021 when efforts from Matheus Pereira, Matt Phillips and Callum Robinson secured a 3-0 Premier League triumph at The Hawthorns.
Colours for the road
The Baggies will wear the green and yellow away kit at St Mary's Stadium.
Ryan Mason's team also donned those colours on Saturday at QPR.
