From Portman Road to The Hawthorns: Baggies Cycle Challenge 2026

Twenty-six determined cyclists took on The Albion Foundation’s annual Cycle Challenge in 2026, completing an inspiring 176-mile journey from Ipswich Town’s Portman Road to The Hawthorns.

United by a shared passion for cycling and a commitment to supporting the Foundation’s life-changing work, the group embraced a challenge that tested resilience, teamwork and spirit in equal measure.

Thanks to the fantastic support of club sponsor Prospect Coaches, cyclists departed The Hawthorns at 6.30am, travelling down to Ipswich in comfort on the first team coach, while Bache Group kindly assisted with transporting bikes to the starting point. On arrival at Portman Road, the group were warmly welcomed by Ipswich Town Foundation staff, complete with a welcoming inflatable arch to start the journey. A tour of the stadium, photo opportunities and the exchanging of match shirts set the tone for what would be a memorable few day.

The journey back to The Hawthorns was broken down over three demanding days, with cyclists grouped by speed and accompanied throughout by Foundation staff in support vehicles, providing any assistance along the way. Each day was carefully planned with a maximum of three stops at 20–24 mile intervals, ensuring riders were fully supported throughout the challenge. Lunches were kindly provided by TRS Media to keep the team well fuelled.

Day one saw the peloton ride 42 miles from Portman Road to Newmarket. While spirits were high, the route presented its challenges, with difficult road conditions leading to a puncture and two riders sadly coming off their bikes. Thankfully, although shaken, all cyclists were able to continue and reached Newmarket safely to rest and recover ahead of the toughest stage.

Friday brought an early start and the most demanding leg of the challenge: a 94-mile ride from Newmarket to Rugby. Setting off at 8.00am, the group were rewarded with beautiful scenic roads and pleasant 19-degree weather, which provided a welcome boost during the long miles in the saddle. The team arrived in Rugby in the late afternoon, refuelling and preparing for one final push to ensure a timely return to The Hawthorns for matchday.

Following an early wake-up call and a light breakfast, cyclists were back on the road at 6.30am for the final 40-mile leg home. Wearing their custom-made cycling jerseys, proudly provided by team sponsor Hudson Group, the group powered on towards the finish line.

The early start on the final morning ensured the group would reach The Hawthorns in good time for the midday kick-off, despite a schedule change bringing the fixture forward for live broadcast.

Reflecting on the final leg, Steve Meeson, Events & Partnerships Coordinator at The Albion Foundation, said:

“It was a 6.30am start for the first group, just to make sure we got back to The Hawthorns on time. Sky TV didn’t do us any favours by bringing the game forward, but that’s what this challenge is all about — adapting and getting on with it. It’s been a great morning, lovely weather and, most importantly, no incidents, which is exactly what you want on the final leg.”

Former West Bromwich Albion captain Paul Mardon also praised the effort of everyone involved:

“It’s obviously a fantastic challenge that all of us have achieved — around 180 miles since Thursday. We’ve had great weather, great banter and a brilliant group of people. Hopefully we’ve raised a lot of money for the Foundation, which is what it’s all about. It’s been a great few day.”

The cyclists arrived at The Hawthorns at around 10.30am to a wonderful welcome from Baggies supporters as they rode into the WBA Fanzone. Deputy Director Jon Ward greeted the group as they reflected on the mammoth challenge, before medals were presented to recognise their incredible achievement. After freshening up, the team entered the stadium to enjoy the West Bromwich Albion v Ipswich Town fixture.

At half-time, the cyclists were presented to the Baggies faithful pitchside before completing a celebratory lap of honour.

The Albion Foundation would like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who supported the cyclists through donations, encouragement and sponsorship. Special thanks go to Bache Group, Hudson Group, CPC Civils, Prospect Coaches and TRS Media for their invaluable support in making the Baggies Cycle Challenge 2026 such a success.
