The Albion Foundation welcomed more than 50 participants to The Hawthorns on Saturday, July 18, for its first-ever Abseil Challenge, with supporters, fundraisers and community partners descending from the iconic Birmingham Road Stand while raising vital funds to support opportunities for people across our community.
The unique fundraising event offered participants the chance to experience The Hawthorns from a completely different perspective, stepping over the edge of the Birmingham Road Stand before making their way safely down the side of Albion's famous home.
From thrill-seekers and lifelong Albion supporters to first-time fundraisers overcoming a fear of heights, the day brought together a wide range of people taking on the challenge for a good cause.
Participants were cheered on by family, friends and Foundation staff throughout the event, creating a fantastic atmosphere around the stadium as each abseiler completed the challenge before receiving a hero's welcome and their unique medal at the bottom.
Among those taking part were new Foundation patrons Our Training Department (OTD), who attended the event alongside members of their staff team. Their commitment to The Albion Foundation's work was evident throughout the day, with the group not only completing the challenge but also smashing their fundraising target and generating additional support for local community programmes.
Hayley Rock, from OTD, said: "If you're not a fan of heights, abseiling from the roof of the UK's highest stadium by altitude probably isn't your idea of fun. But that didn't stop our 'Super Six' volunteers from taking on the challenge at The Hawthorns in support of The Albion Foundation.
"We're incredibly proud of Louise Botwood, Lian Bemrose, Andy Crotty, Sarah Crotty-Dnister, Alex Gilbert and everyone who stepped out of their comfort zones and embraced the descent for such a fantastic cause.
"Together, the team has already raised more than £1,600, with donations still coming in, helping The Albion Foundation continue delivering opportunities that improve health, wellbeing and inclusion across the local community.
"We had an incredible time taking part. The team delivering the event were fantastic and helped create a fun and memorable day whilst raising money for such a worthwhile cause. Most of all, I'm proud of everyone who overcame their fears to complete the challenge.
"A huge thank you to everyone who has donated and supported us so far. Every contribution really does make a difference."
Former Albion favourites Super Bob Taylor and Nigel Quashie were also among those taking on the challenge. Both former Baggies stars shook off their nerves to descend from the Birmingham Road Stand, much to the delight of participants and supporters in attendance.
Reflecting on the experience, Quashie admitted the anticipation was the hardest part.
Nigel Quashie said: "The toughest part was standing at the top and looking over the edge while waiting to go. Once I was on my way down, I was absolutely fine and really enjoyed it.
"It's all for a fantastic cause, which makes it even more worthwhile, and I'd definitely do it again. I was a little nervous beforehand, but it turned out to be a brilliant experience.
"The Albion Foundation does incredible work in the local community, so it's been a pleasure to support them. Keep up the great work."
The challenge also attracted dedicated fundraiser Heidi, a lifelong Albion supporter who has raised more than £30,000 for a range of charitable causes. Known for taking on ambitious sporting and endurance challenges, Heidi once again stepped outside her comfort zone to support the Foundation's work.
Reflecting on the day, she said:
"What an incredible day. Our thanks to everyone involved for making it so fun and keeping us calm and safe."
Her comments reflected the feelings of many participants, who embraced the challenge, supported one another and left with memories that will last a lifetime.
Heidi's father, David, also took on the challenge and admitted the view from the top tested his nerve.
David said: "I think if I'd been undecided about it and then gone and looked from the platform, there's no way I would've come down that rope! When I did look down from up there, I immediately turned my back on the pitch!
"I'm still surprised that I went through with it, but not at all surprised that Heidi did it. She has a confidence that I have never had.
"Thanks again for an incredible, life-changing experience."

With more than 50 people taking part and fundraising efforts exceeding expectations, the inaugural Abseil Challenge proved to be a tremendous success, showcasing the power of the Albion family coming together to make a difference.
Funds raised through events like the Abseil Challenge help drive The Albion Foundation's new strategy forward, creating more opportunities for people across our community. Built around the pillars of Go Local, Grow Our Own and Football For All, the strategy will enable the Foundation to continue creating opportunities and delivering meaningful impact across Sandwell and the Black Country.
