Jimmy-Jay Morgan says his game has taken a ‘step up’ this season after he scored his first goal at The Hawthorns on Saturday afternoon.
The 20-year-old's strike proved to be the difference as Albion secured a 1-0 win over Watford to return to winning ways.
Morgan, who scored twice against Rotherham, once against Norwich and once against Middlesbrough in August, took his tally to five against the Hornets in a feisty encounter.
The first-half effort ensured James Morrison’s Baggies made it 10 points from five league games, and the striker says there’s still more to come from this side.
“It was my main aim to start scoring early,” Morgan said. “I scored a lot in pre-season, so I was really happy to score against Rotherham and to have kept that going into the league makes me feel like I’ve taken my game up a level from last year.
“This division is a step up both physically and mentally, but I’m ready to go again and again and again.
“I don’t remember the goal today that well – I'm not sure what part of my body it hit! I was running at full speed because I could see Harry Whitwell going through and fortunately it went in the back of the net.
“We’re really happy. We stuck together and had to show a lot of fight in the second half especially.
“We probably had to sit back a bit more than we wanted to, but we got the clean sheet which is the highlight for us today.
“We’ve got so much talent but a lot of very valuable experience too. I think us young lads are soaking up a lot from the older lads and the coaching staff and playing with freedom at the moment.
“That’s leading to results too so we’re very happy with where we’re at.”
The Baggies climbed to 10 points with Saturday’s victory, and Jimmy-Jay said standards have been set for the campaign ahead.
“We’ve wanted to be at this end of the table ever since I joined. The whole club has a Premier League feel about it and I feel like I can flourish here. The standards are very high and they’re being embedded in us by the manager and the coaching staff.
“I think the gaffer is quite tough on me. He asked me on Friday if I was up to playing three games in a week, and in my head that made me want to prove that I can.
“I think my performance today was a step up from the one against Charlton. He just drops things in my head to make me want to stay at 100 per cent. I think all the lads are desperate to give their all for him.
“For us new lads, we’re stepping in and know we have to give 100 per cent every day and show what we can do every week."
