James Morrison praised the level of resilience and determination Albion displayed at Wrexham on Tuesday night.
The Baggies came from behind to beat the Red Dragons at The Racecourse Ground and claim three welcome Sky Bet Championship points.
Morrison’s men went 1-0 down when Kieffer Moore’s long-distance strike flew into the net, but efforts from Isaac Price and substitute Aune Heggebø did the damage for the visitors in North Wales.
The boss believes his group stuck to the gameplan, wore Wrexham down and were clinical when the big moments arrived towards the latter stages of the showdown.
He said: “There was effort and there was fight – you have to do that when you come to Wrexham.
“I thought we were really brave with the ball and I thought we controlled the game for large periods of time. We were just lacking that last little bit. I wanted more crosses in the box and more attempts to get in behind.
“We stuck to the gameplan. Us keeping the ball for large spells wore them down in the end. We brought the subs on and they then changed the game for us.
“Their goal was a suckerpunch really – I thought there was a foul on Harry Whitwell. Their player goes and sticks it in the top corner, but the lads showed great character from that moment onwards when you consider the moment we were in and being 1-0 down away from home.
“We kept on going, we kept on making the runs and we kept putting the ball into the box. Isaac Price was there at the back post and Aune Heggebø was there to finish it.
“We’ve probably not been as clean around the box as we would’ve liked to have been. We were getting there quite a lot, but we just couldn’t penetrate. It was pleasing to see the lads stick with it and keep on trying. In the end, we got our rewards.
“You’ve got to be calm and assured in front of goal. Pricey certainly knows where the goal is. I switched him over to the other side in the second half and you could see some of the balls he was putting in, such as the cross for Barney Stewart which he just couldn’t quite get on the end of. Credit to him because he works so hard for the team so I was glad to see him equalise.
“Aune answered in the best way possible. He answered like a good striker does and like a good professional. I love him as a lad and it’s up to me to challenge the players and then they’ve got to be able to show me what they’ve got. I’m really pleased for him and so are the lads in the dressing room.
“That win, especially coming from behind, is massive for us really. If you look in the dressing room and the scenes here away from home, it’s great. We want to keep getting better away from home and these results will certainly help that.
“We’ve come under a bit of pressure really and that’s down to our success and what the team has done and that’s harder to manage. We had to stick together and keep working. I think we’ve found our rhythm again and hopefully this result keeps the ball rolling.
“You know how hard the Championship is and we’ve got to work even harder now. We have to keep going and finish the week off really well at home to Blackburn on Saturday.”
