James Morrison says he was “really happy” with Albion’s dominant performance against Charlton Atheltic, but admitted his group need to be “better in both boxes” moving forward.
The Baggies drew 1-1 with the Addicks at The Hawthorns in the Sky Bet Championship on Wednesday night, with Tyreece Campbell cancelling out Callum Styles’ spectacular opening goal.
The boss believes there were plenty of impressive aspects on display and says the next step for his group will be to add the finishing touches in moments where they are in control.
Morrison said: “On reflection, we deserved more than just a point tonight. I’m actually really happy with the performance. I think we were knocking on the door constantly without the final bit in the first half.
“After the break, we came out and we were really dominant. They couldn’t get near us, but, there just seems to be that common theme at the moment where we’re getting punished for that lack of concentration. Their equaliser was the only time they went near our goal.
“In a short period of time, we’ve come quite a long way and I’m excited by that. I really am. Now, it’s about maintaining that level of performance but adding that winning habit when we’re ahead and then staying ahead.
“We moved the ball well, we got good territory around their box pretty easily. It’s just about the final bit, the final pass or the crosses into the box. We didn’t test their goalkeeper enough and that’s the next step for us. When we’re dominant we need to create more chances.
“I felt really comfortable at the break. We knew what type of game it would be and we knew we would have to try and break them down. We were trying to keep it moving, make them tired and wait until the right spaces opened up.
“We got the goal when we were dominant. We went again after that, and then there was the lack of concentration jumping out and we were all a bit late for their equaliser.
“We didn’t defend the cross and it dropped to their man in the box. It was the only really chance they had. The next step is seeing it out and getting back to keeping clean sheets.
“The final bit is an area of improvement for us, as is making sure we stop conceding goals. We’re conceding too many goals. We need to be better in both boxes. I don’t want us to be that team that is dominant but concedes goals.
“It’s stuff for us to work on. We’ve had new bodies through the door and we know it’s going to take a little bit of time. I think we’re ahead of where we should be given the short amount of time we’ve had to work together.
“It’s a positive that we’re back here on Saturday with an opportunity to claim the three points that we missed out on tonight. That’s this league, we have another chance to put a performance on and get ourselves a win.”
