James Morrison | We must keep building

James Morrison has urged his squad to “keep building” having watched them deliver much-improved displays and pick up five points from their last three fixtures.

The Baggies earned draws against Sheffield United and Southampton before going on to secure a first Sky Bet Championship triumph of 2026 by beating Hull City at The Hawthorns last Saturday.

This weekend, Morrison takes the Baggies down the M5 to Ashton Gate for a clash with mid-table Bristol City.

The interim head coach insists his team have been “adding layers” in recent weeks and insists they’re completely focused on trying to bag themselves back-to-back victories.

Morrison said: “The victory last weekend was the icing on the cake and the reward for the effort and the output we had over the course of that three-game week.

“It was another layer added to what we’ve been doing. I’m pleased that the lads got their reward. However, that was one game and we’ve got to go to Bristol City and back that up again.

“Sometimes, after a win, it can be dangerous. Complacency can creep in and teams can sometimes think they’ve cracked it. My job is to remind the players that that Hull performance was just one game and we’ve still got a big job to do. We have to keep going about our jobs day-to-day, putting in as much effort as possible.

“I know the task ahead and I know there will be ups and downs. It’s about remaining focused and calm, while also making sure the players go out and deliver more decent performances and not drop off and let standards slip. We’re only going to get out of this by working hard each and every day.

“We’re heading down to Bristol City looking for another win. Can we put another performance in, can we show the same fight and determination, because those things helped us get that result last week. We have to go again. If you back wins up with more points, that’s what helps lift you up the table when you put points together quickly.

“The facts are there when it comes to our away form. There’s no getting away from it. We’ve got to use that as fuel. This is a new start and can we put that record right, leading into the final stretch of games after the international break.

“We’ve been trying to build on what we managed to do against Sheffield United. Oxford happened and it was up to us to put it right. We’ve been building since and we need to continue building.”

The Robins were very much in the race for a play-off spot, however recent results have pushed them down into the bottom half of the division and nine points adrift of the top six.

Saturday’s hosts haven’t won in five in all competitions, but Morrison says they’re a “dangerous” outfit who are capable of mixing up their strategy on a matchday.

The boss added: “We’re going into Saturday’s game wanting to win and believing we can win. I’ve watched them and I think they’re a dangerous team.

“They can carry out pretty much any aspect of the game – they can counter quickly, they can play through you and they can defend well.

“The games I have watched, they’ve been fully in the games. Even the one against Middlesbrough last Saturday, they contained them well and the game could have gone either way. It was the same when they played Coventry, with Coventry scoring two goals out of nowhere. They were in the game against Leicester, but they had a bad ten-minute spell.

“I believe this is a dangerous game and we have to be ready for what they’re going to bring. Also, though, we’re in a good moment. If we put our stamp on the game, just like we did last weekend, then we’re a match for anyone in this division.”
