West Bromwich Albion are back on their travels on Saturday as Ryan Mason's men head to Portman Road to take on Ipswich Town in one of the Sky Bet Championship's lunchtime kick-offs (ko 12.30pm).

Both the Baggies and Ipswich were beaten in midweek, with the Tractor Boys suffering a 3-0 setback against Charlton Athletic in front of their own supporters and Albion on the wrong side of a 2-1 scoreline at Watford.

Mason and his opposite number Kieran McKenna will be challenging their respective players to earn a much better result at the weekend.

The opposition

Ipswich Town will be hoping to respond to Tuesday's disappointing 3-0 defeat at home to Charlton by beating the Baggies on Saturday lunchtime.

Town were downed by three second-half strikes in Suffolk, with all three goals coming in a 12-minute period at Portman Road.

It was their second consecutive defeat having also lost at high-flying Middlesbrough last Friday night, results which have left them 11 points adrift of the top two in the second tier.

This weekend's hosts will be targeting an instant return to the top flight following their relegation from the Premier League in 2024/25, but the Tractor Boys, managed by Kieran McKenna, will be well aware of the need to start recording consistent victories if they're to close the gap to the early pace-setters in the Sky Bet Championship.

McKenna, 39, was appointed in December 2021 and guided Ipswich to back-to-back promotions from League One to the Premier League in 2022/23 and 2023/24. The former Manchester United coach has managed 185 Town fixtures, winning 84, drawing 54 and losing 47.

He has several ex-Albion players in his squad - six in total. Goalkeepers Alex Palmer and David Button, as well as defenders Dara O'Shea, Darnell Furlong, Conor Townsend and Cedric Kipre are all part of McKenna's senior group.

Memorable meeting

The Baggies produced a five-star showing to beat Ipswich 5-1 in their own back yard in October 2006.

Kevin Phillips scored a tremendous hat-trick, while Diomansy Kamara helped himself to a brace.

Albion's recent record at Portman Road

Ipswich Town 2-2 Albion, February 2024

A last-gasp Ipswich equaliser denied the Baggies three points in their last visit to Portman Road. Tom Fellows put the visitors in front in the first half with an eye-catching solo strike, but Nathan Broadhead equalised just moments after the restart. John Swift's effort from distance restored Albion's lead and it looked like Carlos Corberán's team would be taking all three points away. However, with seconds remaining, Omari Hutchinson squeezed the ball past several defenders and Alex Palmer to steal a point. Watch the highlights below.

Ipswich Town 1-2 Albion, November 2018

The Baggies claimed a narrow win in Suffolk on a Friday night in November in 2018. Jay Rodriguez's close-range finish had Albion 1-0 up at the break and Harvey Barnes' precise strike made it two towards the end. Kayden Jackson pulled one back for Ipswich with five minutes remaining, but Darren Moore's side held on to claim victory.

Ipswich Town 1-0 Albion, December 2010

The Tractor Boys advanced to the last four of the League Cup by defeating Albion 1-0 on home soil. The only goal of the night came 21 minutes from the end when Grant Leadbitter converted a penalty.

How's that for a stat

Albion are six league games unbeaten against Ipswich Town (W3, D3). The last time Saturday's hosts beat the Baggies was on New Year's Day in 2008 when goals from David Wright and Jason De Vos sealed a 2-0 triumph.

Ipswich players Dara O'Shea, Alex Palmer, David Button, Darnell Furlong, Cedric Kipre and Conor Townsend made a collective total of 770 appearance for West Bromwich Albion.

The Baggies have scored in six of their last seven league visits to Portman Road, including all of the last three.

Only Hull City (19), Bristol City (19) and Coventry City (31) have scored more goals than Ipswich's 16 in the Sky Bet Championship so far this season.

Saturday's clash will be the 75th meeting between the two clubs. Ipswich boast the better head-to-head record with 33 wins compared to Albion's 23. There have also been 18 draws.

Colours for the road

The Baggies will wear their green and yellow away kit on Saturday lunchtime.
