George Campbell | We need to take accountability

George Campbell is interviewed after WBA's defeat at Oxford

George Campbell asserted that the Albion players need to take accountability for the position the club finds itself in following Saturday's defeat.

The Baggies were beaten 2-1 by Oxford United at the Kassam Stadium. Headers from Stanley Mills and Will Lankshear put the hosts 2-0 up inside 27 minutes, but Ollie Bostock pulled one back when his long-range strike took a deflection and went in.

Albion saw more than enough of the ball, yet failed to turn possession into many meaningful opportunities.

“We’re disappointed and we need to look in the mirror,” George began.

“We can’t point fingers at managers or coaches; we need to take accountability and pick ourselves up on the pitch.

“There are 11 games left so there’s 33 points to play for. That’s more than enough to get us going and we just have to do better.

“We knew they were good at playing for set pieces and they’re aggressive in that sense, but then we just played into their hands and gave them the game.

“It’s something we shouldn’t have done and something we need to take ownership of. We need to do better in the next couple of games, focus on our opponents’ weaknesses and strengths, and take advantage of that."

The players huddle before the Oxford game

“I feel like it’s five points lost in the last two games against teams we should be beating, but we just haven’t got going.

"There are no excuses or reasons not to focus and things like that, we have to focus and pick ourselves up.

“Nobody thought we'd be in this position at the beginning of the season, but we don’t have time to feel sorry for ourselves or to sulk. Once we step onto the pitch, we need to work on scoring goals and keeping goals out.

“At this point of the season, it’s not about who’s in charge; it’s about us taking responsibility and showing quality."
