FAWNL Cup Preview | Black Country derby trip for Albion Women

Albion Women will travel to the SEAH Stadium to face Wolves in their FAWNL Cup quarter-final clash on Sunday (2pm).

Siobhan Hodgetts-Still’s side know their potential semi-final opponents should they progress from this weekend's encounter, with either the Baggies or Wolves going head-to-head against Swindon Town or AFC Bournemouth for a spot in the final.

Albion beat Leafield Athletic their most recent match, where a Rhianne Oakley strike was enough to secure a place in the Birmingham County FA Challenge Cup semi-finals.

Last time out

Albion beat Leeds United on penalties at the Alexander Stadium to get to the quarter-finals back in November.

The visitors went ahead midway through the first half, but the Baggies equalised through Molly Kehoe, before a 4-2 triumph on penalties secured their place in the last eight.

The opposition

Visitors Wolves play in the same division as Albion, and sit at the top of the FAWNL Northern Premier.

Dan McNamara’s side are unbeaten in the league in 2025/26, and have a winning run stretching back as far as late August.

Albion’s Black Country rivals also finished at the top of their group, and most recently beat AFC Sudbury in November to progress to the quarter-finals.

Siobhan Hodgetts-Still grabbed her first derby day win last December. Creative midfielder Phoebe Warner’s strike was cancelled out by Wolves forward Greengrass, before Anna Miller’s penalty shootout heroics meant the hosts ran out victors.

Pre-match thoughts

Attacking midfielder Monique Robinson has enjoyed a seamless transition since making the switch to B71 at the beginning of the campaign.

Robinson had previously turned out for WSL and WSL 2 sides Leicester City and Sheffield United, meaning last week’s challenge against top-tier Everton in the Adobe Women’s FA Cup – came as no shock to the system for the 21-year-old.

The former Foxes midfielder wowed both the crowd at the Alexander Stadium, and the audience watching at home on TNT Sport 1 when she put in a performance worthy of the Player of the Match award.

Monique says her side can be “pleased” with the way they played against both Everton and Leafield Athletic – and has urged her side to use the match against the Toffees as a standard-setter for their Black Country derby on Sunday.

Midfielder Monique Robinson has been speaking ahead of Sunday's cup tie

She said: “The Everton game was a game to go out, as a team, and individually, put in a performance. I feel I managed to do that, and I’m pleased with the way I played during that one.

“I’ve played Everton before, I know their tempo is a lot quicker, the ball moves quicker and I feel like we put a good show on for the fans out there. I think playing them can be quite similar to playing the top teams in the league (currently Wolves and Burnley).

“Everton moved the ball well, as do some of the teams in our league, they’re professional, they’re in every day, and they’re a tough team to face.

‘It was a professional performance from us (against Leafield) on Wednesday night. We got the job done. Credit to Leafield, they came out and pressed us high – but we got it done.

“We want to win everything that we can. The aim was to get through to the next round and we have, so all of our focus now turns to the draw for the next round.

“The girls and the coaches have been great with me since joining. They made the transition a smooth one. As the games have gone by I feel like I’ve picked up form and been able to consistently play. I’ve really enjoyed my time here so far.

“Wolves is always a big game, it’s another cup game, it’s a derby so everyone’s up for it. We’re hoping we can make up for the last game against them before Christmas.

“We know what we need to do to stop them. We know how to be more clinical and how we can put that into practice when we play them on Sunday.

“It’d be great to get a win on Sunday, we want to get a win and progress into the next round too.”
