Cancer Kickers Take Centre Stage on Foundation Day

Cancer Kickers participants supporting bucket collections

Foundation Day was an unforgettable experience for the participants involved in our Cancer Kickers programme.

Throughout the event, they played a key role- supporting bucket collections, proudly walking out as flagbearers, and later stepping onto the pitch for a halftime match against West Bromwich Albion Former Players.

A major highlight of the day was that halftime fixture between the Albion Legends and Cancer Kickers participants. For many, the opportunity to play on the pitch alongside former professionals was a dream come true. Excitement filled the air as Cancer Kickers participants prepared for a moment that will stay with them forever.

Philip Williams enjoyed a particularly memorable moment- scoring a goal at The Hawthorns in front of the Smethwick End, which he described as “the icing on the cake.” However, it was the reaction from the crowd that left the deepest impression. As participants walked onto and off the pitch, they were met with applause, cheers, and warm support from fans and family members alike.

What made this even more special was that the support came from everyone present. It was not limited to home fans; away supporters joined in, creating an uplifting atmosphere. For those on the pitch, it was overwhelming in the best possible way. Another participant, Brendan Shaw, described the experience as “like being on cloud nine,” with many saying it was the best experience they had enjoyed in a long time.

This incredible response highlighted how much people genuinely care about the cause behind Cancer Kickers. Gary Bowman shared his thoughts on what impacted him the most; “Sometimes you learn something about people, how much they care about cancer, and that we're doing something about it. So that was really I think that's the thing that will stick with me most- that and the reaction of the crowd”.

Special recognition also goes to Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust, whose team proudly led the players out before kick-off. Alongside our Cancer Kickers flagbearers, they represented the vital work carried out every day, adding to the sense of pride and unity across the stadium.

From the fan zone activities to the action on the pitch, Foundation Day showed how football can bring people together for a meaningful cause. It was a brilliant day, full of smiles, support, and unforgettable moments.
