Alfie Gilchrist is interviewed by WBA TV

Alfie Gilchrist says he'll relish the opportunity to earn regular first-team football at West Bromwich Albion after signing from boyhood club Chelsea.

The youngster made 17 appearances for the Londoners before going on to play plenty of senior matches for Sheffield United during a loan spell at Bramall Lane in 2024/25.

The 21-year-old says it was a challenge to leave Stamford Bridge having spent over a decade there, but insists now was the right time to begin a new adventure in his career and believes the Baggies is the perfect fit.

Alfie said: “It was tough to leave Chelsea after being there for such a long time, but I felt like this was the right move for my career, to move on and find my way somewhere else.

“I only heard about Albion’s interest a few days ago, so it’s all come around quite quickly to be honest. I’m really excited to get going and show everyone what I can do.

“I played against Albion when I was on loan at Sheffield United last season and both games were really good encounters. I remember the atmospheres being really exciting in both matches and I know Albion have some really talented players who I’m excited to work with now I’m here.

“I’m 21 and I want to play regular senior football. I feel like I’ll have a good chance of doing that here if I work hard and continue to develop.

“As I say, I really can’t wait to get going and I’m determined to hit the ground running quickly and show the manager, the rest of the players and the supporters my best level.

“In terms of what I believe I’m good at in particular, I feel like one-v-one defending is one of my best attributes. I’d say I also have a lot of pace and desire, and I’m someone who’ll always give 100 per cent in every single match.

“When it comes to a position, I’m comfortable playing right back or anywhere across the back line. I just want to be on the pitch helping the team out and playing as much football as I can.”
