Alex Mowatt expressed his disappointment not to claim all three points after Albion were held to a 1-1 draw by Portsmouth on Saturday afternoon.
Mikey Johnston’s first goal of the campaign was cancelled out by Colby Bishop’s darting header, with an eventful second 45 unfolding at The Hawthorns following the leveller - resulting in Head Coach Ryan Mason being sent off.
Despite a lively end to proceedings in B71, midfielder Mowatt pointed to his responsibility as one of the “older heads” in the dressing room - after penning a new two-year deal - stating the Baggies mustn’t dwell too much on this weekend’s result after a “good start” to the 2025/26 Sky Bet Championship campaign.
He said: “We started well, got ourselves in front but from then until half-time, we didn’t do as much as we could’ve done with the pressure we put on trying to get a second goal.
“I think we started the second half well and had a few chances; hitting the post, and then a few big decisions didn’t go our way.
“Their goal is a quality goal, a great header, but we’re disappointed not to win the game.
“It was a frustrating moment (in the second half). The gaffer got sent off, I got a booking, everyone in the stadium felt the same, but it’s football and that decision just didn’t go our way today.
“I’m buzzing for Mikey. He’s a confidence player and him scoring today is massive for us.

“He got two assists the other day as well so I’m buzzing for him and hopefully he can continue like this.
“I was gutted when I saw my chance hit the post. We could’ve put the pressure on a bit more with more balls into the box, but we also didn’t lose the game.
“It’s been a good start, but we’re gutted not to have come away with the win.
“I’m an older head now and I think the gaffer sees me as that character which is important for the team.
“Whether it’s talking on the pitch, in the dressing room, setting good examples, and I think I am that character in this team.”
