Albion Women 2-0 Cambridge United

Albion Women scoring against Cambridge

Albion Women secured their place in the Adobe Women’s FA Cup third round with a win over Cambridge United at the Alexander Stadium on Sunday.

The Baggies went a goal up just after half-time as Ellie May struck, before Amya Hammond-McLean’s late tap-in consolidated the victory in Perry Barr.

Siobhan Hodgetts-Still made three changes to the side that beat Sporting Khalsa in their FAWNL Northern Premier clash seven days ago. Centre-half Zoe Creaney returned to the XI, while Fran Orthodoxou and Millie Pullen were also handed starts.

Albion were largely in control throughout the opening period. Orthodoxou almost marked her inclusion with a goal but couldn’t keep her header down as she met Phoebe Warner’s inviting cross.

May could’ve opened the scoring right before the break, but, sadly, blazed over from close range after some sumptuous combination play between Monique Robinson and Warner.

Her wait for a goal wouldn’t go on much longer, though. Warner smuggled a knockdown into the path of the forward and May arrowed an unstoppable effort into the top corner just moments into the second 45.

The Baggies had further chances as a deflected cross from Millie Pullen hit the post, while Orthodoxou also had an effort saved acrobatically by U’s goalkeeper Lauren Webb.

The encounter was wrapped up in the closing stages. Warner ran the length of the attacking half, before unselfishly teeing up substitute Hammond-McLean for a tap-in.

Albion are next in action on Sunday, November 30, when they host Halifax at the Alexander Stadium.
