FAWNL Northern Premier Preview | 10 consecutive wins the target with Norwich City trip

Match Preview featuring Izzy Green.

Albion Women are looking to make it 10 wins in-a-row as they head to Norwich City in the FAWNL Northern Premier on Sunday afternoon (ko 2pm).

Charlie Fripp’s outfit are in fine form across both league and cup competitions, and could spring to the top of the division should they be successful in Norfolk, along with other results going their way this weekend.

Their winning run so far has seen them secure nine straight successes, scoring 27 goals and conceding just seven, with their first-ever recorded league meeting with the Canaries on the horizon on Sunday.

Last time out

Loughborough Lightning were the latest side to succumb to defeat against Albion, despite being ahead at halfway.

But it was Monique Robinson’s second-half hat-trick which turned the game on its head, as she almost single-handedly rescued an important win at the Alexander Stadium.

The opposition

Hosts Norwich City are enjoying a successful spell after earning promotion to tier three via the play-offs last term.

The Canaries beat Moneyfields on penalties at the Pirelli Stadium after a promising campaign in the FAWNL Division One South East, where they finished second.

And since then, they appear to have gone from strength to strength, collecting 10 points from their first seven league matches, leading them to currently occupy fifth place in the league.

Perry Northeast is at the helm at The Nest after joining in July. The 39-year-old was formerly Girls’ Academy Manager at WSL outfit Brighton and Hove Albion, after also having several academy and first-team roles at the Seagulls.

Recently named club captain and last year’s Player of the Season, Grace Riglar, leads the way for goals scored in the Norwich ranks, alongside long-serving winger Holly Kennard - who both have three efforts to their name.

Their only defeat in the division so far came at the hands of league leaders Rugby Borough, but otherwise they’re looking to continue adding to their points tally, starting with Sunday’s clash.

Pre-match thoughts

Izzy Green and Albion have both come on leaps and bounds since the day she stepped into the senior squad from the club’s academy set-up in August 2021.

At that moment, the young defender would never have believed within the next five years, the Baggies would be second in the FAWNL Northern Premier and closing in on a tenth victory on the spin.

Now, over 100 appearances for the club later, Green is looking up as she, and the rest of the squad, target promotion to WSL 2 in 2026/27.

The 22-year-old believes her side have the “belief” and “character” to keep their winning run going.

Izzy Green has been speaking ahead of Sunday's trip to Norwich City

She said: “I thought we started the game well last week. We created lots of chances and opportunities to go ahead. Unfortunately, it was just missing that last bit, whether that be the cross or the shot - we were missing those final details.

“We were disappointed to go in one-nil down, but with the character we’ve shown this season to come back in games and win them late meant we knew we had those goals in us. We knew the second half would be the same, and we were relaxed and wanted to get more goals.

“It shows the character we have together. To get the win and make it nine wins in-a-row is really good for us.

“We want to keep this run going for as long as we possibly can. Every match we play, we want to win, regardless of the competition. Whether it’s a league game or a cup game, we’re keen to win whatever. We’ve got a massive squad, and there are plenty of names coming back from injury, which will help.

“We’ve improved every year since I’ve been here, I really mean that. I can see why we’re in a position where we can push for those top spots in the league. We’re more clinical, defensively we’re solid, and I can’t see why we can’t go as far as we can this term.

“It was one of our main aims this season to be in those top spots. That’s where we want to be, so the belief is there. The character is there, so say when we go a goal down, there’s always that character to go and win that game.

“Everyone wants to be playing, but to have that competition just pushes you on that bit extra. We want to do more in training, and getting those clean sheets on a matchday helps us too - the competition is really good.

“We’re all looking forward to this weekend’s match. It’s an opportunity for us to bond as a group, and we’re going into it with a lot of confidence after last week. We’re excited for the challenge.”
