This is a special group | Charlie Fripp & Monique Robinson on Loughborough Lightning win

Albion Women Interim Head Coach Charlie Fripp believes his side are a “special group” after securing their ninth win in-a-row at the hands of Loughborough Lightning on Sunday afternoon.

But it wasn’t easy for them at the Alexander Stadium, the Baggies had to come from a goal down after a first-half own goal left them behind at halfway.

They didn’t panic, though, and eventually got themselves into a comfortable 3-1 position through a Monique Robinson hat-trick, who Fripp labelled a “special player.”

He said: “It was good today; we spoke to the girls at half-time to say that the opposition were up for it and that we needed to match that. We stuck to the game plan and tweaked it slightly at half-time, then the girls came out and executed it perfectly - this shows in the result.

“I couldn’t have asked for anything more from them all again. It’s a special group, and their ability to keep going and grafting for those wins is impeccable, and I can’t ask for anymore as a manager.

“We’re absolutely buzzing; the girls are here every day trying to improve, and the scorelines are going our way at the moment, which is fantastic.

“We controlled the game really well, especially in the first half, and they caught us off-guard and put the ball in the net - it’s one of those things. We needed to keep playing our football and keep working together - it turned out to be a positive result.

“Monique is a special player; it’s the grit and determination that gets her through matches, and it’s great for her, great for the group. She’s cost me a match ball, but I couldn’t be happier for her.”

Recipient of said match ball, Robinson believes “character” was key as her three strikes ensured a vital victory in Perry Barr.

She said: “I’m buzzing, it was a great shift from the girls, and to come in at half-time a goal down was disappointing, but the character we showed was massive.

“It’s a team game; everyone’s helped and played their part in those goals today. I’m buzzing because it’s my first-ever one.

“The free-kick was my favourite; I saw the goalkeeper was on one side, so I put it the other side, and it went in.

“The message was not to be disappointed because we were a goal down, but we knew we had the character in the room to come back, and we showed that.”
