The visitors - backed by a fantastic away end of 3,400 travelling supporters - almost went ahead in bizarre fashion when Viktor Johansson just about scrambled Mikey Johnston’s cross off the line.

However, the Potters’ goalkeeper was unable to hold Alex Mowatt’s corner for Albion’s opener after 14 minutes, leaving Phillips with an opportunity to net his first since joining over the summer.

Mikey Johnston did see one shot go off-target and another comfortably stopped but it was Stoke who ended the half in search of an equaliser, notably forcing Griffiths into two saves from Million Manhoef. George Campbell also brilliantly blocked Divin Mubama’s effort.

And the hosts threatened twice more following half-time. Mubama quickly struck the post and then, midway through the second period, Bae Junho hit a volley narrowly wide.

Still, Albion had their moments too. Jed Wallace couldn’t quite guide Aune Heggebø’s flick home and Phillips nodded another chance over.

The Baggies did come under some late pressure in Staffordshire as Stoke attempted to continue their winning start. Instead, though, Ryan Mason’s men held on to remain unbeaten going into the two-week September international break.
