Ryan Mason provided an honest assessment of Albion’s defeat at Charlton Athletic on Tuesday night.

The Baggies delivered an improved showing in London, but were beaten with virtually the final kick when Sonny Carey scored from distance.

The boss admits results at the moment “aren’t good enough” and says if chances in matches are passed up, his outfit will be “punished”.

Mason said: “It’s another loss and it’s not good enough.

“Ultimately, the responsibility is on me. At the moment, I’m not doing enough to get enough from the players.

“I feel like the players put the effort in today. We were there, we were in the game. We had opportunities in both halves that we needed to make count and we didn’t.

“To concede how we did right at the end is a reflection on me and what I’m trying to create here, and at the moment, it’s certainly not good enough.

“I’m looking at that and of course I’m thinking we could have come away with all three points, but that’s the reality of football. If you don’t take your chances and you don’t kill your opposition when you have your moments, then 0-0 is a dangerous scoreline.

“At the end of the day, if you don’t win that game we certainly should not lose it.

“It’s not good enough. The overall performance I can speak about, but I don’t think anyone wants to hear about the performance or the positives with that.

“The reality is this is about winning games of football and at the minute we’re not doing that. Like I said, the responsibility is with me.

“Everyone associated with the football club would feel the same emotion of feeling like we should not have lost that game of football.

“We had clear moments and clear chances, but it’s the nature of football – if you don’t put them away and make the most of them then you get punished.

“We were punished today. It’s not good enough.”
