FAWNL Northern Premier Preview | Return to Alexander Stadium to face Liverpool Feds

Albion Women vs Liverpool Feds Preview.

Albion Women are up against Liverpool Feds in the FAWNL Northern Premier at the Alexander Stadium on Sunday afternoon (ko 2pm).

The Baggies are raring to bounce back from defeat in the Black Country derby last time out as they reach their final three league games of the season with plenty still to play for.

Siobhan Hodgetts-Still’s team can secure one of their highest finishes in the division, particularly with them striving for a top-four place, where Stoke City, who Albion have a game in hand over, stand in their way.

It’s also their final match at the Alexander Stadium of the season, with supporters encouraged to come down and show their support in the build-up to next week’s big match at The Hawthorns.

Last time out

It was a narrow 1-0 defeat last time out for Hodgetts-Still’s Baggies at Molineux in their most recent outing.

Amber Hughes’ late goal was the difference, despite plenty of visiting chances in Wolverhampton.

The opposition

Visitors Liverpool Feds always prove tricky customers in the FAWNL, as embodied by the club’s last meeting - a 3-2 victory for the Baggies in battling conditions on Merseyside.

The Feds sit seventh in the division, just three points below Albion, and have collected an identical points tally both at home and on the road. It’s 24 points from 19 matches played for Leanne Duffy’s side (12 at home/12 away), who also boast a net-zero goal difference across the campaign to date.

Forward Chloe Fisher leads the way in terms of goals for the Walton Park-based side. She’s bagged 14 strikes so far this season, which places her fifth in the league’s goalscoring ranks.

The visitors are also unbeaten in three matches, having most recently picked up a creditable draw away at Middlesbrough, a victory over Halifax and a win in their county cup over Everton U21s.

And they’ll be looking to extend that run when they head to the Midlands on Sunday afternoon.

Pre-match thoughts

Midfielder Liv Rabjohn has enjoyed her first season as Albion Women captain, and she’d be even more delighted to guide her team to a top-four place.

The 23-year-old joined the club back in 2023 and has become a vital part of Hodgetts-Still’s ranks this season, being handed the captain’s armband just two seasons into her spell at The Hawthorns.

As part of the team’s leadership group, Rabjohn has been pleased to see her teammates gel incredibly well throughout the campaign, especially after branding their reverse fixture victory over Liverpool Feds as a “turning point.”

Liv believes finishing fourth would be an “incredible achievement” for the club, and she’s confident the “characters” in the dressing room can help them achieve their goal.

Skipper Liv Rabjohn has been speaking ahead of Sunday's FAWNL clash

She said: “We’re really gutted about the Wolves game last week. I felt we were the better team and played the better football at times.

“Ultimately, we didn’t finish our chances earlier in the game. We could’ve gone two-nil up in the early parts, and I think it’s come back to bite us later on.

“It’s down to decision-making sometimes. There are times when we’ve made the right decision, and the shots haven’t come off, and others when we haven’t made the right call. We’d be more concerned if we weren’t getting those shots off.

“We’ve come so far as a team, we’re closing the gap on teams like Wolves, and we’ve shown we’re up for the fight now.

“This season especially, we’ve really kicked on. It shows in the league where we are now and where we could finish.

“We’ve really gelled as a group, that gap is getting smaller and smaller, we just want to keep pushing on now. It gives us massive confidence moving forward, even going into these last three games and next season - we know we can match those better sides now.

“We’re moving in the right direction, we’re getting closer to where we want to be in future. There’s a possibility to finish fourth this season, which would be an incredible achievement for us.

“I’ve loved being the captain this season, of course. I’m just another player at the end of the day, everyone needs to play their part, and every one of the girls has been brilliant.

“The leadership group’s really strong. We’ve got a lot of different characters that help balance each other out.

“We can take a lot of confidence from our recent games. I don’t think we were at our best against Sporting Khalsa, but we were very clinical. The main focus is on finishing fourth in the table, which would be a great achievement for us.

“The last game against Liverpool Feds was a real turning point for us all this season. We played really well during the latter stages, and it helped us realise how high we could finish.”
