Eric Ramsay says Albion's improved display in the 0-0 draw against Stoke City on Saturday has to be seen as a platform to build from for the remainder of the season.
The Baggies produced a resolute showing at home to the Potters and were arguably the better side, but Ramsay's men were restricted to only a handful of goalscoring opportunities.
The head coach says he was pleased with plenty of aspects of the performance but also stressed the importance of finding a way to be more threatening in the final third of the pitch.
Ramsay said: “It wasn’t the result we wanted, but it had the components that we were desperate for. We talked all week about it and I was pleased with the way we responded to last week's defeat.
“We’ve had two really disappointing days recently in Norwich and Portsmouth. We’ve managed to follow up with a performance like today, and that’s the sign of a resilient group.
“We’re trying to find a way through difficult form and today was a step forwards, for sure. We need to make sure we build on everything we did today.
“I don’t think there was a great deal in it from a chances perspective. We restricted them to very little which was important in responding well to the way that we changed shape.
“We were able to come out with a clean sheet, and going forwards we will look at the way we created chances today. We had some really good spells on the ball, particularly in the first half, we entered the final third on a lot of occasions but didn’t have the cutting edge that we’re really going to need.
“In terms of solidity, organisation, and the way in which we adapted over the course of the week - that was a real step forward.
“There’s been a constant surge for solutions. Up until this point, we haven’t found the answers, but we have a group of players and a group of staff that are constantly trying to find solutions.
“We were more on the front foot, we had a better share of the ball and we were able to have some nice moments in there. To be able to have at least some reward for that, in the shape of a point, was pleasing.
“It’s absolutely crucial that we put to bed the ups and downs of the last month. We’ve been far too low over the last few games. We appreciate across the season in the Championship that we are going to have some lows, but they can’t be as low as they have been in recent weeks.
“The fact that we’ve been able to respond after the Norwich and Portsmouth games, and find that baseline level of performance, it means we don’t let ourselves slip below that. We now have to come together as a group, and make sure that we look back on this as a turning point."
