James Morrison says he’s excited for the challenge of taking on Premier League team Newcastle United on Wednesday night.
Albion, who will be backed by more than 2,000 travelling supporters at St. James' Park, head to the north east in good spirits after kicking off the 2026/27 season with three consecutive wins across all competitions.
The boss confirmed the Baggies will stay up there following the Carabao Cup clash to allow for the best possible preparation before Saturday’s early kick-off in Middlesbrough.
Head Coach Morrison asserted he wants to put in a performance the away fans can be “proud of” - and explained his positive outlook on what is a difficult schedule.
He also confirmed there are no fresh injury concerns from last weekend's victory over Burnley.
“Obviously it was an intense and physical game on Sunday, but everyone came through okay," the gaffer revealed. "Mikey Johnston is still being assessed and Jayson Molumby has recovered from his cramp.
"Overall I'm happy with our availability. It means we can go and be competitive in the game. When the draw first came out, I was excited to go up against a top side like Newcastle.
“We’re respecting the opposition, the competition and the 2,000 travelling fans – it's an unbelievable effort from them, so hopefully we can put in a performance they can be proud of.
“It’ll be a tough and exciting week with the challenges of playing a Premier League side in their home stadium. It’s a nice challenge to have, but we will be tested both mentally and physically.
“They’ve got quality all over the pitch, but I feel like we can go there and put up a good challenge. I’m excited. I’ve been at this club long enough to know that our cup runs need to be better, so we’re taking it seriously.”
Due to their tight schedule, Albion will remain in the region through until the lunchtime kick-off against Middlesbrough on Saturday, reducing the team's travel time significantly and providing an opportunity for further team bonding.
Morrison explained: “We’re staying up there for the duration of the two games – I think it’s the best way to prepare properly. We’ll train at venues up there and it gives the new players an opportunity to spend time with their teammates.
“It’s about turning a situation into a positive. It’s good to have the group together for a long period of time, but the end goal is three points at Middlesbrough, which is one of the toughest places to go in the league.
“I’m determined to make sure it’s not a prison camp where everyone’s stuck in a hotel for four days. I’m trying to make the most of the opportunity of having the group together.”
