The Albion Foundation proudly welcomed 29 grassroots teams to The Hawthorns on 24 May for the 2026 edition of the Baggies Cup—an unforgettable day that celebrated youth football and the joy of the game.

Featuring age groups from Under-8s through to Under-11s, the tournament saw over 280 players take to the famous pitch, playing a remarkable 95 matches and scoring more than 225 goals across the day. Teams travelled from across the local area, with a special mention to St. Kevin’s FC and Phoenix FC, who made the journey from Dublin, Ireland and made a lasting impression both on and off the pitch.

The day followed a round-robin group format within each age category before progressing into competitive knockout stages. Every match was played in the right spirit, with sportsmanship and teamwork shining through alongside impressive technical ability. Players relished the rare opportunity to play at The Hawthorns, with many finding the net in front of proud family members and supporters who filled the West Stand, creating a fantastic atmosphere throughout.

Adding to the experience, each team had the opportunity to be announced over the stadium PA system, introducing their line-up to a cheering crowd. Participants were also treated to a behind-the-scenes tour of the first-team changing rooms and post-match interview areas—stepping into the very spaces where Albion players prepare for and reflect on matchdays, while capturing special memories through team photos and selfies.

On the pitch, there were standout performances across all age groups. St. Kevin’s FC enjoyed an exceptional tournament, lifting the trophies in the Under-8, Under-9 and Under-11 competitions. In the Under-10 category, Norton Lindsey Colts claimed victory in a thrilling final that was decided by a dramatic sudden-death penalty shoot-out, showcasing composure and determination under pressure.

Teams such as Halesowen Town, Hednesford AFC, Old Wulfrunians Girls, Worcester City, Bilston Town, Kewford Eagles, Upper Lighthorne FC and Boldmere St Michael’s, among many others, all contributed to a vibrant and competitive tournament that highlighted the strength and inclusivity of grassroots football across the region and beyond.

Every player who took part received a commemorative medal to recognise their efforts, while tournament winners proudly lifted trophies to mark their achievements in the Home Team dugout. These special moments ensured that every participant left with a sense of pride, regardless of the final standings.

Paul Cowie, Girls Player Development Lead at The Albion Foundation, reflected positively on the event:

“It was great to host our annual Baggies Cup tournament at The Hawthorns, creating a memorable experience for the young footballers in attendance. There was some great football being played and the weather was fantastic. The matches were played with great spirit and coaches and parents added to the atmosphere, cheering teams on from the stands. It was extra special to have the teams over from Ireland, showing the reach of what we do goes far beyond the local community. Fantastic goals and exciting trophy lifts made the day even more rewarding. A big thanks to all the teams that made it such a fantastic event.”

With the tournament aligned to the 2026/27 season formats, the Baggies Cup once again demonstrated The Albion Foundation’s commitment to inspiring young people through football—creating opportunities, building confidence, and delivering memories that will last a lifetime.
