Albion and Birmingham City drew 1-1 at The Hawthorns on Wednesday evening.
Alex Mowatt’s early strike was cancelled out by Marvin Ducksch’s 78th-minute goal, meaning the Sky Bet Championship points were shared.
The hosts began brilliantly in a superb atmosphere under the lights. Isaac Price fired narrowly over minute and Callum Styles soon forced a save from Blues’ James Beadle.
Albion didn’t relent, their pressure paying off in the 12th minute when Mowatt caught a sweet half-volley outside the area - his effort taking a little nick and finding the bottom corner for 1-0.
Aune Heggebø saw a venomous, goal-bound volley blocked just after the opener. And though Josh Griffiths comfortably saved Ducksch’s looping header, the Baggies were the ones threatening further despite not scoring ahead of half-time.
Following a delay to the restart because the officials experienced a technical issue, Heggebø had a flick held before the Baggies got through some heavy Blues pressure.
Price couldn’t quite take advantage of two counter-attacking opportunities for Albion as the visitors continued committing men forward.
Birmingham did then grab an equaliser with 12 minutes remaining via Ducksch, who guided a cross home.
Johnston and Mowatt shot off-target in the hosts’ best late chances, and Blues made Griffiths produce a good double-stop too, but ultimately neither team notched a winner.
