Pardew: 'This is a major coup'

ALAN Pardew has hailed the signing of Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge on loan to the end of the season as a “major coup” for the Club.

The Baggies Head Coach was thrilled to complete a double-deal day when the 28-year-old England striker followed Egypt international defender Ali Gabr into the Club.

Both players will add to Pardew’s options and capabilities as the Baggies prepare for a League and FA Cup challenge over the second half of the campaign.

And Pardew believes the signing of the multi-medal winning Sturridge amid significant rival interest from both at home and abroad sends out a significant message.

“I hope our fans can understand that we are fighting to stay in the Premier League, not just on the pitch but in the market place as well,” said Pardew.

“This is a big coup for us and I speak for my staff and my players and say ‘thank you’ to Daniel for agreeing to assist us in League and Cup.

“He has fantastic talent and will strengthen our ambitions on both fronts.”

Birmingham-born Sturridge says joining the Baggies and returning to his home city felt like a natural fit.

“This felt like the right fit,” he said. “I’ve got friends here I’ve played with before, the manager spoke very well, the challenge with the team and the style of play . . . I just felt this was the right fit for me.”
