The Albion Foundation Hiking Challenges
Take On the Peaks With The Albion Foundation: Two Iconic Hiking Challenges Await.
The Albion Foundation is calling on Baggies supporters, local adventurers, and anyone up for a memorable day in the hills to lace up their boots and take on two of Britain’s most iconic summits. Whether you're drawn to the rugged moorlands of the Peak District or the sweeping ridgelines of the Brecon Beacons, these guided treks offer unforgettable experiences—while raising vital funds for the Foundation’s life‑changing community work.
Challenge 1: Kinder Scout – King of the Peak District
Just a two‑hour drive from West Bromwich, the Kinder Scout challenge delivers a classic British hillwalk with a true sense of achievement. Setting off from Edale Village Car Park, this 13km out‑and‑back route begins gently as it winds through farmland towards Upper Booth, offering early glimpses of the dramatic plateau above.
The famous Jacob’s Ladder provides the first real test—short, sharp, and steep—rewarding walkers with glorious views back across the valley. From here, the trail eases onto the Kinder Plateau, where vast skies, weather‑carved rock formations and panoramic views stretch in all directions. The moorland terrain is rougher and more exposed, giving a real taste of the Dark Peak experience.
After exploring features such as Edale Rocks or the plateau edge (conditions allowing), the group returns the same way, finishing the day with a relaxed descent and a renewed appreciation of Edale’s beauty.
Challenge 2: Pen y Fan – The Roof of South Wales
For those seeking a shorter but punchier adventure, the Pen y Fan route offers a spectacular mountain day just over two hours from home. Beginning and ending at Pont ar Daf, the climb starts behind the Storey Arms, quickly gaining height over grassy slopes before emerging onto the shoulder of Corn Du.
The ridge here is nothing short of magnificent. After a final push to the summit of Corn Du, the path sweeps across to Pen y Fan itself—standing proud at 886m, the highest point in southern Britain. From the top, the views roll endlessly across the Brecon Beacons and beyond. A steady descent down the iconic main path completes this rewarding 8km route.
Both challenges are fully supported by a Qualified Mountain Leader and Outdoor First Aider, these moderate challenge is ideal for confident walkers ready for a big day out.
