Perfect Start For Albion Powerchair Team With Four Wins From Four

West Bromwich Albion Powerchair Football Club made the perfect start to their 2026/27 WFA National League campaign, collecting four victories from four matches during an impressive opening weekend.

A new-look Baggies squad travelled into the first round of fixtures full of optimism and determination, and they delivered in style, securing maximum points against Newcastle United, WBA Throstles, Middlesbrough and reigning WFA Cup holders Teesside PFC.

The unbeaten start leaves Albion with 12 points from a possible 12 and provides the perfect platform for the season ahead.

WBA PFC 1-0 Newcastle United

Albion began their campaign with a hard-fought victory over a well-organised Newcastle United side.

The Baggies controlled large periods of the contest but found chances difficult to come by against stubborn opposition. The breakthrough eventually arrived through returning player Marcus Harrison, who forced the ball home in the first half to give Albion a deserved lead.

Newcastle responded well and created opportunities of their own on the counter-attack, but a disciplined defensive display ensured the Baggies held firm to secure a clean sheet and an opening-day victory.

WBA PFC 3-0 WBA Throstles

Albion's second fixture saw them take on familiar opponents WBA Throstles in an all-Albion encounter.

The Throstles have undergone significant development ahead of the new campaign, with Brad Bates stepping into a Player-Coach role as part of the club's ongoing commitment to developing two strong Premier League teams.

Despite the eventual scoreline, the Throstles proved difficult to break down throughout the contest. Albion finally found a route through when a dangerous delivery from Bryan Weiss took a deflection and found its way into the net.

The Baggies doubled their advantage early in the second half after Marcus Harrison won a penalty. Weiss stepped up confidently and converted from the spot to net his first goal in English Powerchair Football.

There was still time for another milestone moment. Academy graduate Noah Stevenson-Lea, who stepped up from Albion's Championship side this season, marked his first-team debut with a goal. Meeting an excellent diagonal pass from Lucas Christer, the youngster calmly finished to seal a 3-0 win and a perfect Saturday for the Baggies.

WBA PFC 3-0 Middlesbrough

Albion returned to the court on Sunday morning to face a Middlesbrough side renowned for their defensive resilience.

The Baggies started brightly and were rewarded when Weiss delivered a dangerous corner which found Jacob Buch-Platt, who fired home emphatically to open the scoring.

Buch-Platt then turned provider, picking out Marcus Harrison, who doubled Albion's lead with a composed finish from outside the area.

Harrison struck again before the interval after winning possession high up the court and weaving through the Middlesbrough defence to complete a clinical first-half display.

With a three-goal advantage established by the break, Albion managed the second half expertly to record a third consecutive victory and a third clean sheet of the weekend.

WBA PFC 2-1 Teesside PFC

The biggest challenge of the weekend awaited in Albion's final fixture as they faced reigning WFA Cup holders Teesside PFC.

The Baggies made an excellent start and controlled much of the early play, with Chris Gordon, Bryan Weiss and Marcus Harrison working tirelessly to keep Teesside pinned back.

However, the cup holders demonstrated their quality when Jack Maxwell finished an excellent move to put Teesside ahead against the run of play.

Albion refused to let their heads drop and continued to push forward in search of an equaliser.

The response arrived shortly after half-time. A well-worked kick-in routine saw Harrison produce a superb pass into the path of Buch-Platt, who arrived at the back post to level the scores.

The equaliser sparked further momentum for the Baggies and, as the pressure mounted, a winner eventually followed.

A dangerous Weiss free-kick created problems inside the Teesside area and Player-Coach Chris Gordon was on hand to apply the finishing touch and complete a memorable turnaround.

Teesside battled until the final whistle, but Albion stood strong to secure a deserved 2-1 victory and complete a flawless opening weekend.

Four Wins From Four

The Baggies return from the opening round of fixtures with four victories, three clean sheets and a maximum 12 points from 12.

Perhaps most encouragingly, the weekend saw several players make significant contributions in Albion colours, with new signings settling quickly and younger players continuing their progression within the club's player pathway.

The WFA National League now pauses until December, with attention turning to the 2026 FIPFA World Cup in Buenos Aires, where several Albion players will have the opportunity to represent their nations on the global stage.

MATCH Week 1: October 25 & 26, 2025

Albion Powerchair enjoyed an unbeaten start to the Slater and Gordon Premiership last weekend.

The Baggies picked up nine points from a possible 15 as they claimed two victories and three draws on the opening weekend in Nottingham.

Albion began the weekend with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Middlesbrough. Captain Chris Gordon stole a Boro free-kick midway inside the opposition half, leaving forward Brad Bates to stroke home for the only goal of the match.

A tight encounter with long-term rivals Aspire PFC followed, resulting in a goalless draw with the soon-to-be league leaders.

The Baggies were held by Newcastle United Foundation in the final game of the day, with neither side able to get on the scoresheet again.

Sunday’s matches began in the same way that Saturday finished. Greenbank were the next to keep Albion’s attacking forces at bay – holding the five-time champions to a 0-0 draw.

The weekend finished more positively, though with the Baggies romping to a 6-2 win over Muscle Warriors in their final match.

Matt Gilbert grabbed a hat-trick, while Ollie Rock also scored twice, Bates also continued his strong start to the season with his second of the weekend.

Albion Throstles were also in action across the weekend, securing six important points thanks to wins over Sevenoaks and Middlesbrough. Their wins were largely helped by Abigail Bolt, who won the Swizzels Unsung Hero award for gameweek one.
