Mikey Johnston discusses first Albion goal

Mikey Johnston is interviewed after playing against Cardiff

Mikey Johnston says he was pleased to have made a positive impact on Albion’s clash against Cardiff City on Tuesday night.

The on-loan winger marked his first start for the club with a goal inside 30 seconds at The Hawthorns, sweeping the ball into the far corner after meeting Tom Fellows’ cutback.

Johnston revealed it’s a move they’ve been working on in training and believes being clinical was key in helping the Baggies record a fifth straight home league win.

Mikey said: “It’s a nice feeling to score my first Albion goal.

“Getting the first goal out of the way early on is always helpful. It gave us a lead early on in the game and it obviously made things easier for us.

“You know what Tom Fellows is going to do. He’ll throw the stepovers in and get to the byline and get a cross in.

“We’ve worked on cutbacks and getting into the right areas and I’m glad that worked tonight.

“I’m here to make an impact. We know what we want to do as a team. We want to make the play-offs and we’ve taken a step closer to that tonight.

“It was my first start in a while. It was minutes in the legs and in the tank. I’m feeling fitter and fitter every day. I’m just trying to implement what the gaffer wants from me.

“Being clinical is so important. I thought we dominated the game in the first half and taking the chance early on really helped.”
