James Morrison 'proud' of Albion efforts in Millwall stalemate

James Morrison says he was “proud” of the way his team played during their 0-0 draw with promotion-hopefuls Millwall on Friday evening.

The Baggies had opportunities to find the winner under the lights at The Hawthorns, particularly in the second half, with Jayson Molumby, Daryl Dike and Ousmane Diakité all coming close to breaking the deadlock.

Morrison believes on another day, his side could’ve come away with three points, but has heaped praise on the steady progress his outfit are clearly making.

The result leaves Albion five points clear of the relegation zone with four games remaining ahead of Saturday's other second-tier fixtures.

The Interim Head Coach said: “I’m very proud of our efforts today. It’s the third game in a week, just after an international break, and a lot of the lads have played a lot of minutes.

“In the second half, we were pushing. They were dangerous on the break and in the first half. We sorted that out, and we looked like the team that might score the first goal - we had the chances to do that.

“There would’ve been some scenes had that gone in. From our perspective, it’s another game ticked off, and we’re raring to go again next time out.

“We wanted to see more structure when we had the ball in the second half. They were counter-attacking us too much in that first period, and we needed to sort that out.

“Similar to the Wrexham game with the chances, we’re finding those situations and might be sitting here looking a lot prettier had one of those gone in. I’m pleased because the bare minimum is that we’re fighting and we’re there for each other - the crowd can see that and that’s what they want to see.

“In these situations, we need to give ourselves a chance. Previously, leading into this, we haven’t, and it’s been a big part of the season.

“I thought Jayson Molumby’s effort was fantastic. He’s played a lot of minutes. I asked him to do a different job, and he was excellent.

“Ousmane Diakité was excellent, so were Nat Phillips and George Campbell, their partnership is becoming really good. Max O’Leary also made some crucial saves at crucial times.

“Daryl Dike had a good performance and good moments. Callum Styles had taken a knock earlier in the game and carried on, along with Alex Mowatt, who’s come back into the side and did well.

“There were lots of positives to take from the performance, and we’ll get some rest ahead of Preston to go again. I’m happy and it would’ve been the icing on the cake to get the win and put pressure on those around us, but we’ll keep ticking away, stay level-headed and keep doing the right thing.”
