The Baggies were beaten 1-0 at Hull City last weekend, but are enjoying a seven-game unbeaten run in front of their own supporters.

Visitors Bristol City claimed a 2-0 triumph at home to high-flying Middlesbrough on the same afternoon Ryan Mason's side lost up north. The Robins are sat inside the top ten, just a few points adrift of the play-off positions.

The opposition

Bristol City have impressed once again in the first half of the 2025/26 campaign having secured a play-off spot in 2024/25.

The Robins are one of several second-tier teams on the hunt for a top-six finish and head into the Boxing Day bout with the Baggies off the back of a confidence-boosting victory over automatic-promotion chasing Middlesbrough in the West Country.

That 2-0 triumph on Saturday afternoon halted a three-game winless run and left them in the top ten over Christmas.

Friday's visitors have a solid away record, winning four, drawing three and losing three of their ten league fixtures completed on their travels so far. However, they've only won one of their last five away from Ashton Gate - a 1-0 success at Portsmouth at the end of November.

Gerhard Struber is Bristol City's boss. He was appointed in the summer following the departure of Liam Manning. The 48-year-old Austrian has previously worked at Wolfsberger AC, Barnsley, New York Red Bulls, Red Bull Salzburg and Cologne. He's won ten, drawn six and lost eight of his 24 matches in charge.

Memorable meeting

The Baggies cruised to a classy 4-1 home win over Bristol City at The Hawthorns in November 2019.

Kieran Gibbs' close-range finish gave the hosts an early lead before Matheus Pereira curled in a sublime free-kick to extend that advantage ahead of the interval.

Famara Diedhiou pulled one back for the visitors with ten left, but Albion added two more goals before the end to seal all three points. Strikers Hal Robson-Kanu and Charlie Austin both hit the back of the net.

Supporters can watch the highlights from that particular night below.

Albion 2-0 Bristol City, December 2024

The Baggies' final game before Christmas last season saw them comfortably beat Bristol City at the Shrine. Mikey Johnston was the star of the show, scoring two first-half goals to leave the hosts in a commanding position. His first was a header from the edge of the six-yard box and his second was a terrific effort from just inside the box with his right foot. Supporters can watch the highlights below.

Albion 2-0 Bristol City, March 2024

Strikes from Tom Fellows and Jed Wallace proved enough for Albion to overcome the Robins at The Hawthorns in March 2024. Fellows fired in from the edge of the box on the stroke of half time, before Wallace doubled the lead in the early part of the second period with a calm finish from six-yards out.

Albion 0-2 Bristol City, October 2022

The Robins recorded a 2-0 triumph at The Hawthorns on a Tuesday night in the middle of October 2022. Both of Bristol City's goals came in the opening half in B71, with Joe Williams striking first and Nahki Wells adding a second. Albion, who were led by Richard Beale that night, tried to get back into the contest after the interval but were unable to hurt the visitors.

How's that for a stat

The last three fixtures between the two sides at The Hawthorns have ended in 2-0 scorelines. The Baggies have won the previous two clashes in B71, with Bristol City claiming a 2-0 triumph in the West Midlands during the 2022/23 term.

Albion have the opportunity to extend their unbeaten run to eight home matches on Boxing Day (W4, D3). The hosts haven't suffered a home defeat since the middle of September - over three months ago.

The two teams met on Boxing Day as recently as 2022. The game was played in the West Country and was won by the side from the Black Country. Matt Phillips and Brandon Thomas-Asante strikes secured a 2-0 triumph.

The Baggies have won seven of their last eight home league games against Bristol City.

Both teams have scored in just one of Bristol City's last seven Sky Bet Championship matches.
