West Bromwich Albion play their 44th Sky Bet Championship game of the season on Saturday, welcoming Midlands neighbours Coventry City to The Hawthorns (ko 3pm).

The Baggies won their last home match 2-1 against Blackpool on Good Friday, but were then beaten 4-0 by Nottingham Forest at the City Ground on Easter Monday.

Opponents Coventry City also suffered a disappointing defeat last time out, losing 3-0 on home soil against automatic promotion-chasers AFC Bournemouth.

Saturday's clash will be the first time the two sides have met in a competitive match in B71 in over 12 years.

Opposition

Coventry City head to The Hawthorns with their play-off dream still alive despite Monday's heavy defeat at home to AFC Bournemouth.

The Sky Blues are four points off sixth with three games to go, but Mark Robins' men will be hoping to be that one side which so often seems to sneak into the Sky Bet Championship play-offs to everyone's surprise.

Coventry, who finished 16th in their first season back in the second tier last term, have enjoyed some memorable moments during the current campaign. Albion are coming up against a group which has done the double over Fulham and come out victorious against Nottingham Forest, Sheffield United and Middlesbrough among many more so far in 2021/22.

Mark Robins is the man in charge and will hit 300 games as Coventry boss should they reach the play-offs. He's over five years into his second stint at the club having also managed the Sky Blues between September 2012 and February 2013, and has helped lead them from League Two back up to the Championship.

Saturday's visitors have had an inconsistent run of results prior to their trip to The Hawthorns, winning three, losing three and drawing two of their last eight games. They have, however, won back-to-back away matches at Fulham and Birmingham.

Mark Robins will take charge of his 297th Coventry City game on Saturday

Classic clash

The Baggies beat Coventry City 5-0 at The Hawthorns in December 2006.

Diomansy Kamara bagged a brace before further strikes from Jason Koumas, Kevin Phillips and Paul Robinson secured a comfortable Championship victory.

Did you know?

Albion have lost just one of their last nine matches in all competitions against Coventry City.

The Sky Blues' solitary victory against the Baggies in that spell came at The Hawthorns in December 2007 when braces from Leon Best and Michael Mifsud fired them to a 4-2 Championship win.

Albion have won seven of those nine fixtures, scoring 21 goals in the process.

Semi Ajayi against Coventry

Albion drew 0-0 with Coventry City at The Hawthorns on Saturday afternoon.

Despite chances at both ends before and after half-time, as well as a stoppage time Karlan Grant penalty miss, the sides couldn’t be separated, ensuring the Sky Bet Championship points were shared.

The game saw the club pay tribute to Baggies supporters Dominic Chapman and Nigel Pearson with two stadium-wide minutes of applause.

Gardner-Hickman against Coventry

Steve Bruce made three changes to his starting XI as Kyle Bartley, Darnell Furlong (suspended) and Alex Mowatt (injured) were replaced by Semi Ajayi, Taylor Gardner-Hickman and Jayson Molumby.

Coventry had the first real effort at goal on 15-minutes, Callum O’Hare playing the ball to Jamie Allen just outside the area and the midfielder side-footing narrowly wide.

Andy Carroll smashed a half-volley off-target shortly before Albion created the best chance of the opening period. Dara O’Shea’s sent Karlan Grant through on goal with a brilliant pass – but the forward’s attempted dink was comfortably saved by Wilson.

Both sides had opportunities in the lead up to half-time, Carroll shooting over for the hosts and Coventry’s Viktor Gyökeres doing the same, but it was goalless at the interval.

Conor Townsend against Coventry

Albion almost scored straight after the break when City goalkeeper Ben Wilson was forced into parrying Matt Clarke’s powerful header.

Coventry then went searching for a goal to try and keep their top six hopes alive yet were stopped in their tracks by David Button, who denied Gyökeres and Ben Sheaf.

Matt Phillips, on for Albion appearance 199, and Grady Diangana were tasked with changing the game during the final stages.

And the hosts could have stolen all three points in stoppage time. Substitute Callum Robinson was fouled in the box, but Wilson saved Grant’s penalty and it finished level.

Albion: Button; Reach, Ajayi, O’Shea, Clarke, Townsend (Robinson 90); Molumby (Diangana 78), Livermore, Gardner-Hickman (Phillips 71); Grant, Carroll.

Substitutes: Palmer, Bartley, Taylor, Kipré.

Attendance: 22,160
