Opposition

Huddersfield Town are right in the thick of a promotion fight having put together one of the most impressive unbeaten runs the Championship has ever seen.

You have to go back as far as late November 2021 and a 2-1 home defeat to Middlesbrough to find their last league loss, and the Terriers arrive on Friday night as the only second-tier side yet to taste defeat in the division this calendar year.

Last Friday night's 3-0 win at the The John Smith's Stadium over Peterborough United was Town's fourth consecutive league win, a sequence of positive results which started with a 2-1 triumph at leaders Fulham.

Boss Carlos Corberán took over in July 2020 and guided the Terriers to safety in his first year, finishing 20th.

But this season, Town have different targets. The club has been outside of the top flight since relegation in 2018/19, but they are now serious contenders to return to England's elite division once again.

Promotion is the target for the Terriers

Classic clash

The Baggies ran out 4-2 winners over Huddersfield Town the last time the Terriers travelled to The Hawthorns in September 2019.

Lewis O'Brien put the visitors in front before Matt Phillips' instant equaliser. Karlan Grant restored Huddersfield's lead ahead of the interval, but second-half goals from Darnell Furlong, another from Phillips and Semi Ajayi sealed three points for the Albion.

Albion's leading scorer this season Karlan Grant bagged 23 goals in 57 games for Huddersfield Town.

Grant represented the Terriers from January 2019 until his move to The Hawthorns in October 2020.

Matt Clarke is the cover star ahead of the Baggies’ clash with Huddersfield Town on Friday night and provides an insightful interview in the latest edition of Albion News.

The defender hasn't been content with recent results but said last Saturday’s win over Hull City was a big “relief”, as the Baggies ended a tricky run of form.

And while the defender acknowledges the threat which Carlos Corberán’s Terriers side pose ahead of this week’s exciting Championship match, the centre-back says Albion have the chance to make a “statement” against one of the division’s in-form teams.

Catch the thoughts of Clarke, along with words from the gaffer Steve Bruce, captain Jake Livermore, Quevin Castro on his first season in B71, the lowdown on Albion Women’s historic first fixture at The Hawthorns last Sunday, as well as the Baggies’ new partnership with Her Game Too.

Huddersfield report

Albion staged a dramatic comeback to draw 2-2 with Huddersfield at The Hawthorns on Friday night.

Danny Ward notched either side of half-time, giving the Terriers a two-goal lead, before Karlan Grant’s penalty and Andy Carroll’s header earned Steve Bruce’s men a deserved point.

Either team could have stolen it at the death in an enthralling finish, but they instead settled for a point each in B71.

Steve Bruce named an unchanged line-up for the visit of the Terriers, with all 11 players keeping their place from last weekend’s win at Hull.

And they started on the front foot – Alex Mowatt almost giving them an early lead when his spectacular volley had to be brilliantly saved by Lee Nicholls.

The atmosphere was up and Albion were creating opportunities, however couldn’t take advantage of multiple corners and long-throws.

Huddersfield weathered the storm well and it was them who managed to grab the lead on 24 minutes, Ward closing down Sam Johnstone’s clearance and diverting the ball into the net.

The Baggies tried to hit back – Kyle Bartley guiding both a bicycle kick and a header over – but couldn’t find a leveller ahead of half-time.

Karlan Grant scores.

Much like in the first period, Albion came out quicker and almost netted – Jake Livermore winning possession to set-up Taylor Gardner-Hickman, however his curling effort dropped just wide.

Again, though, Huddersfield scored next, Ward on-hand to tap home a rebound from close-range despite strong Baggies calls for a foul on Carroll in the build-up.

Straight away Callum Robinson saw a good penalty shout waved away by referee Matthew Donohue as the hosts tried to get back in the game – but they were awarded a spot-kick with eight minutes to go, which Karlan Grant converted to create a grandstand finish.

And the comeback was soon complete thanks to substitute Carroll’s fantastic header into the bottom corner from Semi Ajayi's cross, his maiden goal since joining in January.

Grant smashed the crossbar in the final minutes before Carroll turned saviour down the other end, clearing a Town chance off the line and ensuring a thrilling game ended 2-2.

Albion: Johnstone; Furlong (Carroll 69), Ajayi, Bartley (Diangana 84), Clarke, Townsend; Gardner-Hickman, Livermore, Mowatt; Robinson, Grant.

Substitutes: Button, Kipré, O’Shea, Reach, Molumby.
