Albion Women Manager Siobhan Hodgetts-Still says Sunday’s 3-1 win over Sporting Khalsa was “important” for her side.
The Baggies claimed a hard-fought triumph as efforts from Lucy Day, Ellie May and an own goal ensured a battling victory away from home.
It was a result that was “well-deserved” in the boss’ mind on an afternoon where the visitors picked up their second win in-a-row.
Hodgetts-Still said: “It was an important three points for us today. I thought it was well-deserved, and we were excellent throughout the game.
“We managed it when we needed to and scored some good goals along the way. Our quality on the ball showed in the first half, we just had to fix a few things at half-time.
“We spoke with the players about pressing a bit higher and we asked for more calm in and around the box. Scoring twice at the start of the second half was perfect for us.
“Lucy [Day] was excellent for us today, she played out from the back really well and got her debut goal. I’m so happy for her, she played very well and she’s another defender to add competitiveness at the back.”
Defender Day marked her Albion debut with a goal, a poacher-like finish from the edge of the six-yard box to put the visitors one ahead. Since joining from Birmingham City on a dual-registration basis, she says the switch has been a positive “challenge.”
“It feels surreal. I never expected to score, I just wanted to make an impact and I’m glad I did,” Day said. “At first I was wondering whether it was offside, but I thought to hit it anyways, time froze for a second but I’m glad it went in.
“I’ve never experienced a game like this before, it got very chaotic. We battled incredibly hard and got three points away from home, that’s what we came to do.
“My debut went as perfectly as I could hope, it was amazing. It was always going to be difficult coming into a senior game for the first time, but to play for a senior side – it’s a different type of football and a great challenge.
“It’s tested me massively and credit to the girls they’ve helped me settle in really well. The girls have been brilliant since I came in, it’s like I’ve been here for a few years.
“I was apprehensive coming in having not played for another team apart from Birmingham City, but I feel part of the team now.”
The Baggies are next in action on Sunday, November 23 (2pm), as they host Cambridge United in the Adobe Women’s FA Cup.
