Premier League Cup Report | Exeter City 1-2 Albion

Souleyman Mandey celebrates.

Albion's youngsters put in a terrific display to secure passage into the knockout stages of Premier League Cup over Exeter City on Tuesday evening.

Souleyman Mandey's first-half double proved enough for Leigh Downing's side to claim the spoils at St James Park, ensuring their place in the next round.

Albion started the stronger of the two sides and could've grabbed the lead in the opening minutes, first through Evan Humphries and then Mandey - whose curling effort was well-saved by the Grecians' goalkeeper.

Mandey wasn't to be denied in his next opportunity though, after Michael Parker put the ball on a plate for the 19-year-old to fire home from within the area.

Deago Nelson threatened to double the Baggies' lead just ahead of the half hour mark, but the Exeter goalkeeper managed to parry his effort over the bar.

More chances came for the Albion, with Mandey forcing another save before Justin Seven-Seven fired over on the rebound.

The visitors got the second goal they deserved in the 38th minute and in emphatic fashion - Mandey firing home on the volley after an Albion corner was only half-cleared, giving Downing's side a commanding lead heading into the break.

Downing's men continued where they left off, immediately threatening the Grecians' goal via Humphries - but for more brilliant goalkeeping to deny the skipper, who saw his shot parried away.

George Birch threatened to find a route back into the game for the hosts after being played clean through, but Louis Brady denied him with a smart stop.

The Baggies were soon back on the attack, and Torin Ntege was next to come close to adding a third after latching onto a loose ball but couldn't find a way to fire past the goalkeeper.

Albion played out the final stages with little fanfare - but there was time for a late consolation for the hosts, but it did little to stop the Baggies heading back to the Black Country with all three points and a spot in the knockout stages of the competition.
