Premier League Cup Report | Albion 1-0 Queens Park Rangers

Remar McNeil celebrates scoring.

Albion booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Premier League Cup with a 1-0 win over QPR on Wednesday evening.

Remar McNeil's early finish was enough to ensure Leigh Downing's side passage through the Round of 16 in a solid display at the Alexander Stadium.

Albion started the stronger and that early promise delivered within the first ten minutes courtesy of a lightning counter attack.

Eseosa Sule was played in on goal before taking aim, with the goalkeeper only able to parry the striker's low effort into the path of McNeil, who couldn't miss from point blank range to hand Downing's young men an early advantage.

The visitors were seeing plenty of the ball without truly testing the Baggies' back line, and in truth Albion looked the most likely to find the net again as the half drew on - particularly on the counter attack.

Half chances fell to both sides - but neither could make the telling touch as the first half came to a close.

The Baggies started the second 45 stronger without creating much in open play and could've doubled their lead in the 54th minute after a corner to the back post had the Rs goalkeeper struggling, but the hosts couldn't force the ball home.

McNeil and Torin Ntege were next to try their hands at finding the second goal of the evening, with the former drawing a good save with a wicked effort from the right before the latter dragged an effort wide from just outside the box.

QPR were growing into the half after a slow start, but it took until the 70th minute for them to test Ben Cisse, who was sharp to come out and smother as the visitors bore down on goal.

Sule saw a chance go begging before creating another brilliant opportunity for McNeil, but his finish flew over when well placed to test the goalkeeper.

Frustration boiled over as the visitors started to fade, and it saw the Rs reduced to 10 as the game entered its closing stages - Isak Alemayehu picking up a second yellow card to make the Londoners' task even harder.

Albion should have been out sight come the 88th minute but for a brilliant save from Charlie Warren to deny Souleyman Mandey at close range, before the Baggies man saw another goalbound effort blocked moments later.

But the hosts weren't made to pay for their lack of a second strike - and cruised through the seven minutes of added time to ensure they booked their place in the quarter-finals.
