FAWNL Cup Preview | Semi-finals the aim as Black Country Derby awaits Albion Women

Wolves vs Albion Match Pack.

Albion Women will aim to book their place in the semi-finals of the FAWNL Cup when they travel to face Wolves at the SEAH Stadium, home of AFC Telford United (2pm).

Siobhan Hodgetts-Still haven’t played since a game since the two sides met just prior to Christmas at the Alexander Stadium, after their FAWNL Northern Premier clash with Hull City Ladies was postponed last weekend.

The Baggies will hope to open 2026 with derby day revenge, after losing their last two encounters against their local rivals.

The visitors went ahead midway through the first half, but the Baggies equalised through Molly Kehoe, before a 4-2 triumph on penalties secured their place in the quarter-finals.

The opposition

Visitors Wolves sit top of the FAWNL Northern Premier.

Dan McNamara’s side are unbeaten in the league in 2025/26 and have a winning run stretching back as far as late August.

Albion’s Black Country rivals have the goalscoring trio of Amber Hughes (13), Beth Merrick (10) and Charlotte Greengrass (8) to thank for their promising form this season, with the former sitting at the top of the division's ranks.

Pre-match thoughts

Midfielder Seren Watkins is no stranger to a derby fixture, having played in three Black Country derby’s now, and several battles between South Wales adversaries while at Cardiff City.

The tenacious 22-year-old joined the Baggies in the summer of 2024, knowing that her swashbuckling nature would translate well to the English third tier - and that it has.

Watkins was arguably the best player on the pitch when Albion secured their most recent win over their local rivals in December of 2024, a penalty shootout victory in the Birmingham County FA Cup quarter-final, and Manager Siobhan Hodgetts-Still’s first in charge of the club.

The midfielder has sights set on repeating that feat, and says that recent defeat against Wolves has only further fuelled her side’s ambitions to “get those feelings back.”

Watkins said: “I think it’s important that we bounce back positively. We know we can compete with them and we had moments of the game where we were on top.

“It’s important that we get those small things that we got wrong, right. We want to do what we did against them in the cup and get the win.

“It’s massive, I think the feelings we had during, and after that game where we won, were amazing. It motivates us to want to go and get wins, whether it’s Wolves, Burnley or any of the big teams.

Watkins believes it's important to bounce back "positively" from their pre-Christmas defeat

“It’s more important when it’s a Black Country Derby. You want to go and make it competitive and put in a good performance.

“We want to go and get those feelings back from the last cup match and get a win, it'd be pretty special.

“Playing against Swansea City for Cardiff City, those were my favourite games when I was there. Those are the games when you really get stuck in and that suits the type of player I am.

“It helps massively, I want to take the same mindset from being back at Cardiff into these derby matches against Wolves. We just want to go and give it our best and make it competitive.

“It’s not ideal to have a postponement [Hull City, which was postponed on January 4]. We want to get back into the rhythm of the games, we’ve had plenty of rest so there’s no excuses – we should be more than ready come the Wolves game.”
