Albion Women Interim Head Coach Charlie Fripp believes Wednesday’s victory over Birmingham City PGA at The Hawthorns “says a lot about the group.”
Though he admitted his Baggies side weren’t at their best in the 3-1 win over the young Blues at the Shrine, Fripp was quick to express his pride in the group as they reach the middle of their two-game week.
And after five victories on the bounce, he’s keen to continue momentum as they host Sporting Khalsa at the Alexander Stadium on Sunday afternoon (ko 2pm).
He said: “I couldn’t be prouder of the girls. They continued the winning streak, while the performance wasn’t what we want it to be - we got the job done.
“A win’s a win; sometimes football isn’t nice, and you need to get results in that way. We still score even when we’re not playing at our best, and that says a lot about the group - it’s a credit to them.
“It’s all down to the work that the individuals and the work the staff do. It’s nice to see that even when we aren’t at the best of our abilities, we still manage to turn around results.
“It’s always nice to go through in the cup; the objective is always to win. It’s our double gameweek; the girls have worked hard across these last two matches, and our mentality is to win on Sunday and get the job done to finish top of the group.”
Taylor Reynolds added Albion’s second to their tally on Wednesday evening, and though she may have been looking to pick out a cross as the ball floated over the visiting goalkeeper - she says it was “important” to score and get all three Group N points.
She said: “It was important we won, it was our fifth win in a row, and performance-wise I don’t think we were massively satisfied. We got the three points in the League Cup, but we can be disappointed with some parts of our game tonight.
“We wanted a clean sheet tonight, and we didn’t get one, but we did get the job done.
“I just thought about crossing the ball (for the goal). When it flew over the goalkeeper, I was buzzing. I don’t score often, so I was happy to do so.
“The goal was to win the group. We wanted to do that as the top seed and we wanted to finish as high as we could. We want another win on Sunday, though, to complete the group stage.”
