West Bromwich Albion travel to Stoke City on Tuesday night for a first-round clash in the Carabao Cup (ko 7.45pm).

The two teams have come up against each other 151 times before, but the fixture at the bet365 Stadium will, incredibly, be the first in the League Cup.

The Potters kicked the 2023/24 campaign off with a comfortable 4-1 victory over Rotherham United on home soil, while the Baggies suffered a 2-1 reverse at Blackburn Rovers.

The opponents

There's plenty of optimism around Stoke City this season following a number of new arrivals through the door in the summer.

The Potters have added plenty of new faces, including goalkeeper Mark Travers, defenders Ki-Jana Hoever, Luke McNally, Michael Rose and Enda Stevens, midfielders Ben Pearson, Daniel Johnson, Chiquinho and Andre Vidigal, as well as Brazilian forward Wesley.

Stoke made a storming start on Saturday, sweeping Rotherham United aside 4-1 in Staffordshire, a result which only added to the renewed expectation levels among supporters.

The 2023/24 campaign is their sixth successive season in the second tier and, in that time, Tuesday's hosts are yet to finish higher than 14th.

Stoke will have their sights on the play-offs this time around though, and Alex Neil's group will be keen to make it two wins from two games at the start of the campaign when the Baggies visit in the Carabao Cup in midweek.

One to remember

The Baggies secured three important Sky Bet Championship points on the road against Stoke back in November 2019.

Matt Phillips got the ball rolling as early as the eighth minute before Hal Robson-Kanu slotted in a second-half penalty to seal a 2-0 scoreline.

The Potters' moment of glory in the competition came in 1971/72 when they claimed a 2-1 triumph over Chelsea at Wembley in front of almost 100,000 spectators.
