Albion Women 3-1 Stoke City

Albion Women's Olivia Rabjohn celebrates her goal against Stoke

Albion Women cruised to an opening day 3-1 win over Stoke City on Sunday afternoon.

Goals from Olivia Rabjohn, Hannah George and Fran Orthodoxou helped the Baggies to all three points at the Valley Stadium, despite Heidi Logan's late consolation.

The result ensured it was the perfect start for new boss Siobhan Hodgetts and her FA Women’s National League Northern Premier Division side.

Stoke saw an early goal disallowed for offside before Rabjohn fired Albion into a 19th-minute lead, the midfielder smashing one into the top corner from the edge of the box.

The hosts, playing at their new Redditch home for the first time, controlled proceedings and went close to a second when Meesha Dudley-Jones tested Georgie Ferguson.

Not to be deterred, they did manage to double their advantage as half-time closed in –George converting a penalty by sending Stoke’s goalkeeper the wrong way.

That first period showing was built on straight after the break, Orthodoxou tapping home off a dangerous corner to grab Albion’s third.

Logan pulled one back in stoppage time for the visitors - but ultimately Hodgetts’ team saw the victory out to begin the 2023/24 campaign in style.

Albion: Jones, Reynolds, Newell, Green, George, Orthodoxou (Loydon 66), Evans, Warner (Bennett-Steele), Rabjohn, Mahmood (Weston 66), Dudley-Jones (Walklett 85).

Substitutes: Locke.
