Albion Insight | Felix Horn Myhre settling into Sky Bet Championship life as Hammers win suggests

Creative midfielders famously do take their time to settle into life at a new club, especially when moving from another country.

Spaniard David Silva took over a month to log his first goal contribution at Manchester City after transferring from Valencia in 2010. Similarly, Dennis Bergkamp was ridiculed by the press for taking seven games to register a first goal contribution on his arrival at Arsenal, while closer to home, Baggies cult hero Robert Koren’s only assist within his first half-season with the club came against Colchester United in a cup tie - his only goal that term coming three months after his signing date from Norwegian club Lillestrøm SK.

Now, there are players who can buck that particular trend and take like a duck to water to their new division, and Felix Horn Myhre, who signed for James Morrison’s men from SK Brann in August, certainly seems to be doing so.

His early-season showings, aside from his debut goal against Rotherham United, spell adaptation, but in Albion’s incredible 3-1 victory away at West Ham United, the Norwegian put in one of his finest finesse-filled features - here are the numbers behind it.

In just his third batch of consecutive starts for the club, Myhre scored the opener and elegantly tee’d up JJ Morgan for his seventh strike of the campaign, bagging the Player of the Match Award at the London Stadium.

His successive features in the XI had been across a number of positions, including a deeper midfield role, as a second-striker, and out wide - but over the last two games, the Oslo-born creative force has settled just behind the likes of the Baggies' No.11 and Barney Stewart.

And this role appears to have given Myhre more freedom, and as we saw against the Hammers, it meant he was free to drift over to the left-hand side to create wide triangles with the likes of Ousmane Diakité and Isaac Price, who themselves would head over to that side of the field - as seen in his most common passing network throughout the match.

His tidiness in those zones ensured he ended the day with an 81 per cent pass accuracy - matching the entire squad’s average.

Having such a fluid mover in the Norwegian buzzing around them meant Saturday’s home central defender pairing of Airidas Golambeckis and Max Kilman weren’t sure what to do - especially given Morgan was looking to play on the last line, pinning at least one of them to their defensive structure at all times and unable to mark the visiting No.7.

Myhre was also particularly effective in those attacking areas, boasting 0.93 xG (Expected Goals), the highest total of any player on the field.

Admittedly, the whole of that total comes from his goal after 20 minutes, where his strike partner Morgan - playing on the shoulder of the Irons’ defence - broke with speed to undo the fragmented home side.

Still, his assist for the 20-year-old's goal was a telling moment of quality, deftly touching the ball down with the top of his foot to allow the forward to regain the Baggies’ advantage early on in the second half.

It’s snippets of quality like Saturday’s which Albion fans will hope to rely on in the coming weeks, and should Myhre keep it up across a potentially successful second-tier campaign, he won’t be far away from cult-hero status himself.
