Albion Insight | Isaac Price positional shift turning point in Wrexham triumph

Albion Insight featuring Isaac Price.

Isaac Price came to life and once again transformed the fortunes of an Albion side against Wrexham on Tuesday.

The Northern Ireland international’s two goal contributions within the last 11 minutes of the Baggies’ trip to The Racecourse Ground saw the visitors come from behind to clinch a crucial three points.

But it wasn’t just a stroke of luck which saw Price lay on both a goal and an assist - the first time he’s done so in an Albion shirt since joining in January of 2025 - there was a smart positional shift from boss James Morrison to alter the course of the Sky Bet Championship clash.

The visitors were taken aback by Moore’s long-range pearler (0.02 Expected Goals), which curved sweetly around the outstretched body of Max O’Leary and into the net just after the hour mark.

Moore’s speculative strike seemed to open up a tight game, which had only generated 0.37 xG until then. And a 76th-minute double switch ended up being the difference-maker for Morrison’s men, when Barney Stewart and Harry Whitwell were replaced by Aune Heggebø and JJ Morgan.

With the latter of the two more comfortable cutting inside on his right foot, and keen to occupy the left half space - it made sense for Price to move over to the right side.

Right-back Brayann Pereira, enjoying a splendid showing of his own with the joint-most duels won in the match (10), was behind him to cover any dangerous counter-attacks from the home side, and Price was allowed to push on alongside opposite number Morgan, remaining higher up the field.

And it was there Morgan’s deflected effort found him lurking - right at the Red Dragons’ back post.

The dilemma then for Phil Parkinson’s wing-backs was to either track back and become a flat back five, or to keep pushing high in search of a second - Jacques Ekomié opted for the latter - leaving the Baggies with an overload in that area for Price to prod from an xG of just 0.20 into the roof of Anthony Patterson’s net.

It was a masterstroke which not only nulified the home side’s industrious wide men, but allowed Morrison’s most effective players to get into higher areas - a risk well worth taking in hindsight.

Only five minutes later, Ekomié wasn’t sure who to mark out of Price and Pereira, leaving the former to occupy the space between wing-back and outside centre-back to receive Nat Phillips’ line-breaking pass.

The midfielder’s instinctive cross (one of four across the 90 minutes) was greeted by the diagonal run of substitute Heggebø, who, in trademark fashion, cut across his defender to finish his second of the season at the near post and third in total in 2026/27.

Price ended the match having created the joint-most chances (3) of any player on the field, and will surely look to this Player of the Match performance as an opportunity to springboard further stellar showings.
