Carabao Cup 1

Albion head to Derby County in the second round of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night (ko 7.45pm).

The Baggies reached this stage thanks to a 1-0 win over Sheffield United in round one at The Hawthorns earlier in August, while League One Derby progressed after securing a 2-1 victory at Mansfield Town.

The two teams have met five times before in the League Cup. The Rams have won four of those, with the other clash going Albion's way.

Derby boss Liam Rosenior played under Steve Bruce when the pair were together at Hull City, but this will be the first time they've gone head-to-head as managers.

The feel-good factor is back at Derby County after the club was taken over by Derbyshire-based property group Clowes Developments (UK) Ltd in the summer following a turbulent financial period off the pitch.

The Rams are competing in League One this year having been relegated from the Sky Bet Championship last term and are managed by former Fulham, Reading and Hull defender Liam Rosenior.

Rosenior, 38, was Wayne Rooney's assistant during the 2021/22 campaign and was offered the main role in late June.

The Rams added a host of new faces to their squad following the takeover in the summer, including the likes of James Chester, Conor Hourihane, David McGoldrick and James Collins to name a few.

They've taken eight points from their first five league games and reached round two of the Carabao Cup thanks to a 2-1 win at Mansfield Town.

Derby, who have never won the League Cup, will be hoping to avoid a second-round exit for the fourth successive year on Tuesday following defeats to Nottingham Forest in 2019/20, Preston North End in 2020/21 and Sheffield United in 2021/22.

From the Albion Archive

Albion won 2-1 at Pride Park in the first leg of their second-round tie against the Rams in September 2000.

Deon Burton, who now works with the Baggies' U23 group, put Derby ahead in the opening 45 minutes, only for Neil Clement to equalise shortly after the break.

The hosts then had Haracio Carbonari dismissed and Albion made the Rams pay by scoring a late winner, courtesy of Richard Sneekes from distance.

One for the stattos

Albion's trip to Derby will be their first away game in the League Cup since August 2017 when they won 3-1 at Accrington Stanley in the second round.

Salomon Rondon, Matt Phillips and Jay Rodriguez were all on target that night at the Wham Stadium.

The Baggies' last nine ties in the competition have been played at The Hawthorns.

Callum Robinson in action at Derby

Albion were beaten 1-0 at Derby County in the second round of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday evening.

Louie Sibley’s first half goal was enough to send the hosts through to the next stage of the competition.

The Baggies return to Sky Bet Championship action with a trip to Huddersfield on Saturday.

Matty Phillips in action at Derby

Steve Bruce made 10 changes to last weekend's line-up, naming a similar side to the one that beat Sheffield United in the first round.

They started well in Derbyshire and should have taken the lead on the three minute-mark – Reyes Cleary finding Callum Robinson inside the box, but the Irish international seeing his shot well saved. Adam Reach might have done better, too, when sent through via a lovely Kyle Bartley long-pass, however his finish went over.

Instead it was Derby who grabbed the lead through Sibley’s long-range effort, the midfielder curling past Alex Palmer after 15 minutes.

The Baggies spent the remainder of the first period looking for an equaliser. Matty Phillips headed the best opportunity straight at Joe Wildsmith, while Cleary also blazed off-target.

Derby soaked up the pressure well and were then twice denied a second just before the break thanks to Palmer’s saves from Sibley and David McGoldrick, though still took a one-goal advantage into half-time.

Reyes Cleary in action at Derby

The chances continued to come following the interval – Phillips and Reach both hit over, Cleary had a header saved and Robinson was denied by County’s goalkeeper.

Bruce brought on John Swift, Grady Diangana and Karlan Grant as the visitors ramped up their search.

But Derby were still threatening on the counter and Palmer needed to be alert to deny Sibley’s shot.

Six minutes of stoppage time gave Albion some hope – yet Jed Wallace's low effort, saved by Wildsmith, was the closest they came to a leveller.

Albion: Palmer; Ingram (Fellows 45), Bartley, O’Shea, Ashworth (Swift 66); Livermore, Gardner-Hickman; Phillips (Diangana 66), Robinson (Wallace 76), Reach; Cleary (Grant 66).

Substitutes: Button, Ajayi, Furlong, Molumby.
