Albion PL2 skipper Jamie Andrews says his team-mates will relish the challenge of competing against Aston Villa at Villa Park on Friday night (ko 7pm).

Midfielder Andrews has enjoyed a positive start to the campaign, embracing the captaincy placed on him by boss Richard Beale while also contributing consistently in the final third during matches this season, providing two goals and two assists.

Friday’s short trip to Witton is one the 20-year-old has made before, losing 4-1 to Villa’s U18s in the 2021 FA Youth Cup semi-final.

But the Baggies captain believes the current youngsters approach the derby clash with a “different mindset” this time around, as they look to record back-to-back league wins and bring the bragging rights back to the Black Country.

“It’s a local derby and hopefully there’ll be a few fans there to add some extra feeling to the game,” said Andrews.

“We want to end up with the bragging rights.

“Having the responsibility of being captain this year has made me be more vocal on the pitch. I will still get in the head of my opponents, but now I do it tactically to help the team.

“I think I only managed two goals from open play last season and one assist. So to have two goals and two assists already this year in five games is really pleasing.

"It’s something me and the coaches have looked at and I’ve been trying to get forward more and, hopefully, I can get higher numbers this year.

“We put in a resilient performance against Derby last time out and it could’ve been a lot bigger scoreline than it was.

“There was a lot of lads in the current squad who played at Villa Park in the FA Youth Cup when we lost and it affected us a lot. But we’re glad it happened because it gave us a kick which showed us that we are better than what we showed that day.

“We’re a different team with a different mindset now and we want to go there, show everyone what we can do and, hopefully, claim all three points on Friday.”

Albion's PL2 side claimed the derby-day spoils, hitting Aston Villa for six to earn victory at Villa Park on Friday night.

The game got off to a lightning quick start, with Albion going ahead in the first minute. Mo Faal latching on to a smart through ball to get himself through on goal before making no mistake with his finish.

It didn't take long for a second to arrive, with Zac Ashworth getting on the end of a brilliant corner kick, powering home a fantastic header to double Albion's lead.

A third arrived in the 23rd minute, with Reyes Cleary finding room in the area, and finishing with aplomb off the bottom of the post.

The hosts were struggling to get any kind of hold on the game, but earned themselves a goal back against the run of play, Todd Alcock striking from 30 yards out, beating Ted Cann as his effort clipped the crossbar on its way through to the back of the net.

Albion restored their three-goal advantage not long after, with Josh Shaw picking out Cleary with a ball forward before he rounded the goalkeeper and fired home.

The first half ended with even more action as the hosts were reduced to ten men, after the Villa shot-stopper brought Rico Richards down outside the area leaving referee Michael Barlow with no other option to brandish a red card.

The second half started in the same vein as the first, with Richards, Cleary and Faal all coming close to adding to the goal tally within the first five minutes.

Despite controlling the majority of possession, it was Albion who would concede next. Declan Frith firing into an empty net after pouncing on some momentary confusion at the back.

Reinforcements came on just after the hour mark, with Faal and Richards making way for Ramello Mitchell and Jovan Malcolm. It was the latter who would make an instant impact, firing home Albion's fifth of the night from within the area.

Mitchell then capped off the rout in style, latching onto a neat ball forward before rounding the helpless Villa goalkeeper to tap home.

Cleary, still in search of a hat trick, had a great opportunity to claim the match ball in added time, but couldn't find the back of the net after some good work on the left of the area saw him find room in front of goal.
