Albion continued their preparations for the new season with a comfortable 2-0 behind-closed-doors win against Sheffield Wednesday at the training ground on Tuesday.

The Baggies, building on Friday night’s victory at Woking, dominated large parts of the friendly and were leading at the break thanks to Matt Phillips’ first-half brace.

Valérien Ismaël used the goalless second period to give valuable minutes to the remainder of his squad, including Callum Robinson and Romaine Sawyers who both featured for the first time this summer.

Grady Diangana featured in Albion's 2-0 friendly win against Sheffield Wednesday

The boss made just one change to his line-up as Cedric Kipre came in for Dara O’Shea - and Albion produced a storming start when Phillips headed home Conor Townsend’s whipped cross inside six minutes.

The hosts were controlling proceedings and found their second goal half-hour later, another Townsend delivery caused problems for the Wednesday defence and Phillips converted well from close-range.

Alex Palmer replaced David Button at the interval before Ismaël made 10 further substitutions throughout the half, but Albion still managed to command the game and create chances.

Dara O’Shea and Ethan Ingram headed dangerous deliveries by Taylor Gardner-Hickman narrowly off-target, while Sawyers side-footed wide from the edge of the area in the final stages of the match.

The third goal didn’t arrive, though, so the Baggies had to settle for an encouraging 2-0 triumph against their Sky Bet League One opponents in the Black Country sunshine.

Albion: Button (Palmer 45), Ajayi (O’Shea 61) , Bartley (Clarke 61), Kipre (Taylor 61); Furlong (Ingram 61), Livermore (Castro 61), Mowatt (Sawyers 73), Townsend (Gardner-Hickman 61); Diangana (Robinson 61), Phillips (Zohore 61), Grant (Tulloch 61).
